I plan on contacting the guy from retrousb.com once he gets back from vacation, to see if his virtual boy usb kit is still available. It’s not showing up on the site, so I might be out of luck. Unless there’s someone here that would be willing to sell me an already modded VBoy controller. 😉

Other than that, what controllers are you all using while playing original and homebrew games on an emulator?

I am using a Xbox 360 Wireless Pad for Windows + XPadder to map the buttons. Works great! I can use the two sticks to emulate both DPads if needed.

P.S. Please use the image attachment function of the forum instead of hotlinking.

I use that USB one… I believe the VB USB kit is the same as the NES/SNES kit, but for some reason they just don’t sell it as a VB kit anymore. But they could probably tell you that info for sure.

I’m “oldskool”, so I use an unmodded pad with an adapter I made (out of an NES controller socket) connected to a parallel port. It’s directly supported by the PPJOY driver.

I’m using the Raphnet universal adapter that I built, with the custom firmware that supports VB controllers (I posted about it a couple weeks back right here.) It feels great using a real VB controller.

Thanks for linking to your post in this thread. It’s really helpful. I’m assuming you’re using a surface mount adapter. I’d love to go that route, but I’m pretty sure I don’t have the means to flash the firmware. It’s great to see all the different routes people have taken.

Actually, since the design is completely open sourced, I built the adapter from scratch using through hole parts on stripboard. If you already have the tools, the parts cost is under $10. As far as flashing, if you don’t need anything fancy you can flash AVRs with a parallel port cable (called dapa), which is just a DB25 and some wire connected to the right pins. It’s not the safest thing, but when I first started using AVRs, I used a dapa cable. This is the instructable that got me started. Now I use a USBTinyISP that I bought off eBay for $15. (link) It’s a nice little programmer and works great with avrdude. Hope this helps!
