Well originally I was totally against R-Zone believing it to be a useless console. After buying my first complete NOS R-Zone XPG with Jedi Adventure… I decided to buy a loose console to try it out because online reviews can’t show what it’s actually like.

After much deciding over the last couple weeks, I have now bought 3 head units (because its cheaper to collect games with consoles) and the NOS XPG.

I now own the following R-Zone games:

Star Wars Jedi Adventure (NOS, so I have no opinion on the game)
Star Wars Millennium Falcon Challenge (Quite fun, has a Vectrex-like feel)
Battle Arena Toshinden (hard to play because I don’t have a manual, nor is there one for download)
Primal Rage (Actually pretty cool once you learn the special combo moves)
Batman Forever (Very close to your average Tiger handheld, which is a good thing… Classic)
Indy 500 (Also feels Vectrex-like, standard racing game)

Overall, it’s actually surprisingly good; but difficult to collect for because its obscure.

I spent around $80 for it all, which isn’t bad but now I have 2 extra head units, which I guess friends could use for play?

I was also able to download a console manual, the Batman Forever manual, Indy 500 manual and Primal Rage manual. The other games sadly do not have them available because they are slightly rarer.

What nobody else curious about plunging into this interesting system?

Actually they are reasonably fun, especially the racing and fighting games. I really like playing “Millennium Falcon Challenge” and “Primal Rage”!

I could definitely suggest those two games as fun. I currently have 6 games, but all I have played are quite playable and decent.

Virtua Fighter 2

I just bought a system about a month ago and now I have Daytona 500 and Virtua Fighter 2. I hope to one day have a complete collection, even though they don’t pop up on eBay much. Is there somewhere else I can get R-Zone games?

I have been thinking about system in recent months, i may have to think about it a little harder, see if i can pick up a cheap system and give it a go.

I had one with two games (the one with the headstrap) and sold it 2 years ago…
Actually it wasn´t that much fun, since it is kind of a HUD, which lets you see the game only on one screen (right eye). Gave me a hard time playing, it also was to near to my eye and there was no way in extending the distance.

I never played the handheld version – maybe it is better. But when it is for red displays I prefer the VB 😉

Definitely prolonged play with the head mount requires some pausing. But I really do enjoy playing some games on the R-Zone.

What I like with that System is the approach in design and idea. The early 90ies were full of ingenious, crazy and corageous concepts in game design, be it a console or a PC game.

In this regard the R-Zone is truly a child of that era. That´s what I am missing nowadays…although I think that the HUD version of R-Zone is failure in design – since you cannot adjust it if you´re near or far-sighted, which makes it useless to people like me.

But it´s a neat cyberspace gadget kind of game system 🙂

Well I have been playing my newest arrival Indy 500, it’s pretty great!

But my 3rd headunit listed as untested is battery leak killed, so I scrapped all the useful parts for my other 2 completely functional systems.

The untested headunit and Indy 500 together only cost me $9 though, so oh well.

Do you only collect VB and R-Zone, or other handhelds too?

I have a Sega Nomad, 3 Gameboy Pockets (gloss blue, dark blue, clear purple), Gameboy Light (gold), 2 Gameboy Advance SP AGS-101 (Black Graphite, and Blue).

I also have an Original Gameboy (broken, had it since childhood), and a Gameboy Color (Teal, also broken). I wish I had respected games more as a child.

I have around 80 various GB/GBC/GBA games, I am not sure of the ratio but I mostly play them on my GameCube via Gameboy Player.

I used to collect Sega Gamegear but sold my collection (of about 15 games) as it wasn’t to fun. I do intend to collect WonderSwan in the future if I can find atleast 3 games I am interested in.

This board compelled me to finally purchase an R-Zone!

I won it for $13 USD shipped, and it came with the head unit, a NOS Star Wars: Jedi Adventure (with yellowed packaging that I am tempted to open..), and the game that I really wanted on the R-Zone, NiGHTS Into Dreams!

However, NiGHTS has bubbles on its LCD. I do know that this is not a unique issue based upon what I have seen with other carts for sale on ebay.

As you can see, it is not noticeable during game play.

I have done research online, but the nets have turned up dry with information.
Does anybody know what might cause this, or how to fix it, merely for optimal collecting purposes?

I remember when it came out but I really knew nothing of the system. Glad to see someone’s found some fun with it, though. 🙂 Post some pics of your setup, yeah?

I had one of these, briefly, several years ago – the only games I ever got for it were NiGHTS (which came with it) and a Star Wars one that seems to have fallen off the planet… I think it was called Rebel Forces? It was a shooting gallery style game, and the cartridge art around the edges had pictures of Stormtroopers.

In any case, as a kid, I remember being pretty severely disappointed, after convincing myself that the system was going to be a lot cooler than it actually ended up being. It would be cool to dig it out again, though, for old times’ sake.

Iv just bought one these off ebay for £8.50. it came with 3 games, batman forever, indy 500 and apollo 13.
Only trouble is the seller forgot to mention that it has suffered major battery leakage so at the moment it doesnt work:-(
Going to have a proper look at the weekend and see if i can get it working, hopfully just corrosion that i can clean up. Watch this space!

Dang people with NiGhTs and Apollo 13. I still need both of those games, and yes most carts have the bubbles, as far as I am aware it’s not an issue.

Anyone else enjoying the R-Zone?

I enjoy it for what it was. I have all but like 3 games lose and about 10 games unoppened. I am still missing a Super Screen to test that out but have an extra X.P.G. if someone wants to trade a Super Screen for it. It’s a unique part of gaming history and I’m glad to be able to preserve what I can from it. It’s like the game.com in that respect. Now if only I can find the damn game.com modem and Wheel of Fortune 2.

Got mine working, cleaned up the battery terminals and replaced the wires to the circuit board, powered up first time.
Got hooked on indy 500, simple gameplay but very addictive.
Hope to get a few more games for it.
