Original Post

I’ve spent some time lately on creating some Boxes for my games. Initially Tusk told me he would print them for me, that’s why I used his template. However, after I finished designing the Boxes and send them to him he explained me that he is all busy with building Boxes for Gundam. As I would have had to wait 2-3 month for him to print the Boxes I decided to do the printing/crafting myself.

Obviously, the results are not as good as what you get from Tusks store but they turned out pretty decent. I’m planning to do a guide on how to create Boxes like these on your own. Basically I have them printed somewhere (I paid around 30$ + shipping for 12 prints), then cut them myself and glue them together. For the white cardboard inlay thing i bought GameBoy inlays (around 1$ each) and modified them.

Here are some pictures. I did the GameHero Box first but messed around with the glue. After that I did the Faceball Box but I screwed up cutting one edge. Also the top lid turned out bad. The Fishbone Box I did last. Everything went fine there. I still have plenty of prints lying around so I will try to improve the process. The Box I don’t need I will give away for free. Most of them have a name on them already though.

Thank you. I’m planning to publish some templates and a complete guide soon so that everyone can make Boxes themselves easily.

I was pretty occupied lately so I didn’t had allot of time to work on this. However, I did put some more Boxes together this weekend. The latest ones look pretty good. I also made photos of (nearly) every single step so I can put them into my guide.

I got several requests for the free Boxes (especially the Fishbone ones) and all of them have a name on them now. I just hope I won’t screw anything up, otherwise some may not get one. I’ve 5 more Boxes to build. After that I will send everything out.

OK, I’m done building together all of the boxes. I will probably send everything out next week or so. In the end it took me around 20 minutes building one box (cutting, folding, gluing and so on). Most of them turned out pretty good. On some of them I screwed up a little bit though.

I documented everything with photos and will start writing everything down. Hopefully we will see more self-made Boxes in the future then.

I just finished the first version of my Box template. I’m using inkscape for drawing. I know allot of people prefer photoshop but I was aiming for a free and easy to use alternative.

I started with a scan of one of Tusks boxes to have a proper outline. I then drew every element by hand including the Nintendo logos, the recyling logo and so on. The only rastered images left are the bracode, the ESRB logo (which I took from this template: http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/TEMPLATES/NDS/Nintendo%20Handhelds%20Template%20-%20Shenske.psd)
and the Virtual Boy logo (which I took from this thread: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5260&forum=1).

Eventually, I want everything to be a vector so that high quality prints are possible. You might notice that I didn’t draw all of the lines of background yet. That’s something I still want to do but it will take allot of time.

Fell free to take the files for whatever you want. If you improve something just post an updated version in this thread.

Impressive Thunderstruck :] Providing games and boxes for said games, you are a one-man game company 🙂

(For some reasons, having 40Mo of pictures on one page makes my browser crash.)

Nice boxes..

I want one of those boxes 🙂
