Hey everyone! So I just got my hands on a new Nintendo Virtual Boy Hat to add to the collection. Though I had to patch it up quickly due to the seller stuffing it in the package. Though it had me wondering, how was this hat obtainable in the first place? I do recall that the other Purple VB hat was only obtainable in a Contest, though I assume this is a different Varient of it due to it’s design. Can some one inform me? – Alex

That Contest would be the “VIRTUAL BOY MUST SEE 3-D SWEEPSTAKES”, where contestants had a chance to win many prizes from Nintendo. 2,500 2nd place winners received a Virtual Boy Cap! The Cap would’ve made the winners look “real happening”!

I’m not sure if the Cap pictured on the sweepstakes ad really exist. It could be that the hat pictured above is really the actual hat that was given away to contestants and the image on the ad was just a mockup of what the Cap might’ve looked like. Almost like there should’ve been some fine print that Stated “actual style may vary” since the hat pictured above looks like the one shown on the sweepstakes ad minus the border around the Virtual Boy logo. Or maybe the hat pictured on the ad is soo rare it just hasn’t surfaced yet. I’ve never seen one in my 10 years of searching for rare VB items, and I never seen an actual picture of the hat anywhere online either, just that image on the sweepstakes ad. I’ve seen quite a few auctions for the above hat in my day, and many of the sellers call the hat a Nintendo employee promotional item, but then again I’ve also seen many auctions where sellers call rare VB items “employee promos” when the items actually originated from somewhere else, so… I’m not sure where the hat came from… I guess would be the central theme I’m trynna get across here.

Nice score though! Attached is a link with some pictures of the 3-D sweepstakes entry forms…

So many mysterious we still have to uncover, maybe the one listed on the picture is most likely is a prototype. Now that I’m thinking about it, I wonder out of all the Virtual Boy hat’s; which are the rarest due to quantity.

this is the hat I own. Could rip the patch off of mine, put it on your purple one and have the one from the ad.

That was also very true about the Dragon Hopper VidPro card… but then BAM!

I, too, am always on the lookout for the sweepstakes cap.

Not exactly… one thing that I just noticed about the sweepstakes cap, is that if you look closely, you’ll notice that the VIRTUAL BOY logo has some white threaded accents around the letters, and that’s something that the red/black VB cap doesn’t have. The more I zoom-in and stare at the logo, makes it look like the design of the logo on the sweepstakes hat may not actually be thread at all, it could be ink designed to look embroidered. So maybe the hat does exist, IDK… Can’t wait til’ one shows up though!

Tru dat! : )

Looks like only time will tell. If only we could track down some of the winners who won the contest. Then we’ll know more about the hat and if it’s out there somewhere.

You would think if they actually made 2500 of them that at least ONE would have shown up by now though.

All of the caps, save for the red and black one, hardly ever show up online, though. The Cap (Grey) that I have is only one of two that I have ever seen online, and in the six years that I’ve been searching for Virtual Boy stuff, I have yet to see the cap designated on this site as CAP (BLACK) for sale anywhere. Incidentally, I’ve also never been able to find the T-shirt (Grey) that would complement my cap.

The Cap (Black) has always intrigued me. I have a friend that has the Grey Virtual Boy Hat from his youth, though he isn’t really wanting to sell it at all even though I keep bugging him about it.
