So, upon the advice of a friend, I’ve decided to expand my GB game collection while prices are still relatively low. So people of the VB community, are there any GB games you would recommend? Any hidden gems I should snap up?

I assume you only want Game Boy recommendations and not GBC/GBA, but here’s my list:

-All 5 Mega Man/Rockman World games (althogh MMII/RW2 is a mess)
-Mole Mania
-Zoop
-Mario’s Picross
-Picross 2
-Donkey Kong Land 2
-Donkey Kong Land III
-Ghostbusters II
-Bomberman GB
-Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
-Wario Land II
-Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Montana’s Movie Madness
-Alien 3
-Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge
-Heiankyo Alien
-Rolan’s Curse
-Tetris Blast
-Avenging Spirit
-Donkey Kong
-Darkwing Duck
-Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
-Kirby’s Block Ball
-Kwirk
-TMNT III: Radical Rescue
-Yoshi’s Cookie

i always felt daedalian opus was a hidden puzzle-gem.

motocross maniacs for an honorable mention.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Just to clarify on my first post, I’ll happily take any GBC & GBA recommendations too.

16 GBA must plays –

– WarioLand 4
– Astro Boy Omega Factor
– MegaMan Zero 3
– MegaMan & Bass (if not already played on SNES)
– Ninja Cop
– Drill Dozer
– Metroid Fusion
– Metroid Zero Mission
– Zelda: Minish Cap
– Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
– Final Fantasy Tactics
– Wario Ware, inc.
– Mother 3 (English translation)
– Sonic Advance 3
– Gunstar Super Heroes
– Mario Kart Super Circuit

Lots of good SNES ports, but I kept out some that are already very well known and usually played (like Zelda Link to the Past).

There are many more great games. These are just my favourites I would always recommend in a flash to fans of action & adventure.

Yeah dude, Game Boy is my jam. I’ve played close to all of the ~500 (black and white) USA games, and I’m starting to look into imports now as well. Game Boy and Virtual Boy feel like close cousins when it comes to the style of games available.

Great suggestions so far, I haven’t discovered any hidden masterpieces or anything, but it partly depends on what kind of game you like. There are SO MANY crappy sidescrollers. And lots of puzzle games, but I love puzzle games, and I never understood why people complained about having too much of a genre that is perfectly suited to the Game Boy.

But don’t get me started! I’ll add a couple must-plays:
– Super RC Pro-Am
– All 5 Kirby games
– Zelda: Link’s Awakening
– Super Mario Land 2
– Tetris (unless you already have V-Tetris for VB :D)
– BurgerTime Deluxe
– Dr. Mario
– Elevator Action
– Game & Watch Gallery
– Boomer’s Adventure in ASMIK World
– Kid Dracula
– Metroid II
– Revenge of the Gator
– Tetris Attack
– Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
– Yoshi

GB/GBC Games
– Quarth
– Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
– Pokemon (Red/Blue/Yellow/Silver/Gold/Crystal/Pinball/Puzzle Challenge (Crystal was GBC ONLY)
– Yoshi
– The Adventures of Lolo (European and Japanese releases only)
– Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins
– Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
– Tetris
– Kirby’s Dreamland 2
– Tamagotchi
– Ghosts n’ Goblins (GBC compatible)
– Adventure Island 1 & 2

Do you have a GBA flash kit? I can link you to some amazing homebrew projects.

Please do! I know of Another World which is an excellent port – and there are more and more good translations and improvement hacks coming through. But I don’t have exposure to many other good actual homebrew games / demos / projects so would love to see some!

If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, could you link me? I have a GBA flash cart and am always looking for new things to load on it.

No one ever talks about that game but it’s easily as addicting as Tetris. My dad and I would spend hours huddled over our GameBoy playing it.

In that case…

For GBC:
-Dragon Warrior III
-Dragon Warrior I & II
-Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (has a great Vs. mode when 2 games are linked)
-Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong
-Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 or 2 (if you like Pokemon)
-Mario Tennis
-Mega Man Xtreme 2
-Metal Gear
-Pokemon Puzzle Challenge
-Scooby Doo: Classic Creep Capers
-Wacky Races

For GBA:
-Advance Wars
-Capcom Classics Mini Mix
-The GBA Donkey Kong Country remakes
-Mother 3
-Wario Land 4
-Ware Ware
-Wario Ware Twisted
-Gunstar Super Heroes
-Astro Boy: Omega Factor
-TMNT
-Asterix & Obelix XXL
-Slime Morimori: Dragon Quest (recommend playing a DS game called DQ Heroes: Rocket Slime first)
-Kuru Kuru Kururin

Thanks for the suggestions! I recently bought Quarth, and that one is really fun and addictive for such a simple concept.

Great! So glad you wound up liking the game. I really love the music on the Game Boy version vs the NES/Famicom ones.

Oooh, there’s a few I really like for all three. I’ll list some noteworthy ones with little mini-reviews!

GB/GBC:
Game & Watch Gallery 1, 2, 3 are all really cool collections of Gunpei Yokoi’s Game & Watch handheld games. There’s modern versions of the games with Mario & friends and classic versions that faithfully emulate the original handhelds.

Legend of the River King is a fishing RPG with a calming atmosphere, well-done graphics and music, and heck, it’s a rad fishing RPG! It’s a nicely-done concept, I’d like to see more of it someday.

Mario Tennis is a tennis RPG about a boy who trains to become the bestest tennis player ever. Mario and friends aren’t in the game until the postgame, actually! But I think everyone knows that by now. It’s solid and you can upload your player character to Mario Tennis 64 if you wish!

GBA:

WarioWare Twisted is a bunch of gyroscope-controlled microgames that are frantic, funny, and REALLY well-done. I wonder why I can’t think of a game that’s used a gyroscope better even though gyroscopes are commonplace nowadays.

Advance Wars and Duel Strike are must-plays for anybody who has a GBA. It’s a light-hearted Intelligent Systems strategy game with a huge variety of units. It’s legendary for a reason.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is probably one of the best RPGs ever made. Seriously. It’s bursting with character and charm, the gameplay is unique and interesting, think Paper Mario with two playable characters that can perform a wide variety of combination attacks that require quick reflexes and good timing. There’s a 3DS remake, but it’s kinda meh. Play either one.

Hope some of these suggestions helped, I can give more, if you want!

Some great suggestions here, but the lack of any mentions of Bionic Commando makes me a sad panda. Such a criminally over-looked and under-appreciated title… so sad… tears…

Great graphics (for a GB game), excellent soundtrack (even better than the NES counterpart, which set the bar high itself), excellent controls, great level design.. and you no longer have to exit completely out of a level to switch out your comm device if you selected the wrong one.

A lot of Gameboy games can feel like cheaper experiences compared to their NES counterparts, but Bionic Command on the B&W Gameboy I feel is the other way around. Other than lacking color, which doesn’t bother me at all personally, this is far superior in every way to the NES Bionic Commando. That it’s portable and on the go as well just makes it that much sweeter.

Another great title often over-looked is Ninja Gaiden Shadow. Although despite the name it isn’t quite a Ninja Gaiden game, it appears to have been renamed that for the NTSC region from Shadow Warriors. But we’re splitting hairs now, what matters is that just like the previously mentioned Bionic Commando, this game is the compete package: graphics, sound, gameplay, level design.. all top notch. Always an incredible achievement with the tight hardware restrictions of the Gameboy. The first level even boasts an impressive parallax background scrolling illusion.

And lastly, Rolan’s Curse 2. The overworld theme alone is quite possibly the catchiest piece of chiptune to have ever graced my ears. You could tie me to a chair and force me to listen to it for days and I’d feel great. This game is a top-down RPG that even boasts a multi-player option. Haven’t had a chance myself to ever try it though, so can’t say much in regards to that, but even solo this is a great RPG that appears entirely forgotten.

Actually Ninja Gaiden Shadow is the original (western) name and it was renamed Shadow Warriors for the European release. The NG arcade game, most of its ports and the NES title were also originally renamed Shadow Warriors.

You’re correct to say it isn’t quite a Ninja Gaiden game however, as it was originally going to be a Game Boy Shadow of the Ninja title. Play Shadow of the Ninja (NES, re-released in recent years on Wii/Wii U/3DS) and you’ll notice the similarities.

Ah seems I got it the other way around, thank you for the clarification.

But yeah even from my very first play-through it just seemed a bit ‘different’ from the other Ninja Gaiden games. But still a fantastic game, especially in a portable format you can take on the go. And at least unlike the NES Ninja Gaiden games, the challenge level wasn’t obscene.

I collect a lot for the game boy and these are the best of the best in my opinion. I’d at least recommend checking them out on youtube. Not in any particular order:

Trip World
Chalvo 55
The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls
Wendy: Every Witch Way (Game Boy Color)
Metal Masters
Pokemon (all of them including TCG and pinball)
Banishing Racer
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Game Boy Adventure
Kid Dracula
Spud’s Adventure
WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color)
Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise
Donkey Kong (The 1994 Original GB Game)
Gargoyle’s Quest
Tiny Toon Adventures

A lot of these aren’t very well known. They’re all top notch though.
