I unfortunately encountered some display problem with my VB after some time of not using it. The left display is fine, but the right display shows weird images. I attached three images, left eye is ok, but for the right eye it is not even a stable display, but changes (though never giving a “right” image).

I know the typical scan line issue, but is this also still in line with it or something else? I mean there’s not only horizontal lines but also a lot of vertical and random noise going on. Any ideas? Or should I just proceed with the “baking” of the display unit? Special screwdriver is already ordered! πŸ˜‰

Yup, that’s the infamous deteriorating display problem. It’s not always horizontal lines across the display, as you’ve seen. The display signal is digital, so complete or partial disconnection can cause a wide array of graphical effects.

I’m an opponent of cooking the displays in an attempt to correct the problem. The silicone adhesive originally used to affix the ribbon to the PCB cannot be reactivated with heat because it’s chemically cured. Any attempts at physically manipulating it will at best result in only a temporary fix that will revert over time, or at worst damage the display circuit.

The correct solution is to have the displays serviced to enforce a stronger connection. The ol’ “strip off the ribbon coating with lye and solder the leads directly to the PCB” method is the best we’ve come up with, but I’m convinced there’s gotta be a better way…

The “better way” is to just physically peel the plastic off before soldering. Once HP Lovethrash is done moving, our collaborative how-to for display repairs will explain this in detail.

@Vulpes: I highly recommend you DO NOT bake displays. Contact HPL or TheForce81 and have them fixed the correct, permanent way. You won’t regret it.

Thanks both of you for the quick confirmation! I also would definitively like a permanent fix. Though I’m generally not afraid by soldering stuff, I think here I would leave that to the experts! πŸ˜‰ Will contact TheForce81 then.

Just as update: Thanks to TheForce81 my display are now back to perfect conditions! πŸ˜€

Hi, been long time visitor to the page but have only just signed up. My VB has started having similar issues and I would also like to avoid the baking method. Is theforce81 still the person to contact about this repair?, I notice he hasn’t been on for a month or so.

Also I am located in Australia does anyone know if this would be a problem with shipping etc?

Thanks

I am here, still doing repairs, need to respond to your PMs. The thing is, I have broken my left hand, which fortunately isn’t my soldering hand, but I still need it to keep things steady. Also, typing goes at the speed of a snail…
Cast will be removed in two weeks, so will be good to go then.

Will respond with details to you guys soon.

Aww… Hope your hand heals soon!

Thanks, me too πŸ˜›

i baked the display and after a while shipped it to HP and he did a GREAT job! so it doesn’t hurt anything just took a while

Ouch, TheForce81, get well soon! And not only because we need your soldering skills! ;-p
