Original Post

Hello everyone!

I was contacted by “mellott124” who asked me if wanted to create a default set of labels for the HyperFlash 32, which I gladly did. My plan was to create a set for the officially released games anyway.

If you have no idea what i’m talking about, please see the “HyperFlash eInk Label Art Contest” thread in this forum.

You’ll be able to follow my progress in this thread.

The basic idea behind the labels:
– It should be easy to identify the game.
– The design should look clean and be coherent.
– A (somewhat) homage to the old american box design.
– Fun and true to my own vision.

It’s really great to be a part of this great project! I will do my best to make these as awesome as I can. If you don’t like them in the end, I guess you can always switch them out πŸ˜‰

Please feel free to feedback and comment.
Thanks Kevin for trusting me with this!

Wow! These are getting better and better with every single label! I am stoked.

@KR155E: Thanks man! I appreciate it. The idea was initially to keep them quite minimal, haha, but as I do more and get better at pixel art I try to challenge myself. These last ones have been a bit more complicated than the first ones for sure, but I think they are all still pretty coherent. I let the game in question tell me what labels it wants πŸ˜‰

I think that some of the coming ones will be a bit simpler in design, the variation is nice. It depends on the game too of course.

Keep up the good work! πŸ™‚

@The Red Menace: Thanks man!

Here’s the latest one, Virtual League Baseball.

Here are the latest: Virtual Bowling and 3-D Tetris. I’ve tweaked some of the others too (can be see in the overview post, page 1).

Lookin’ good. Kinda funny how all the Virtual Bowling labels usually turn out quite nicely πŸ˜‰

@The Red Menace: Haha, yeah. Lucky there are two bowling games then πŸ˜‰

Some new labels done: Wario Land and Galactic Pinball. I’ve done more icons too (see post #2).

Some more labels done. Not many left now of the original set. All the icons are done too (see post #2).

Here’s the latest one: Jack Bros.

Great work! All the labels looking fantastic!

@Cosmoliner: Thanks!

Here’s the Virtual Lab label. Man, I haven’t tried that game and I probably never will, looks like a total piece of shit game. As I understand it, most likely not finished.

Anyway, went with the box art as inspiration for the label but skipped the human characters.

EDIT: Not sure why the images of my latest two posts aren’t showing up as normal.

While the quality of V Lab is certainly lacking there can still be some fun had with it. It’s worth at least trying as a curiosity

Haha yeah, maybe I came off a bit too harsh πŸ™‚
I will have to try it at some point.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I think it’s awesome that the game exists, not trying to offend any Virtual Lab fan πŸ˜‰

Ok, I’m done for now. All the labels for the original released games plus Hyper Fighting and the default/programming are finished, as well as their corresponding icons.

Just wanted to drop in and say congrats; and thanks! As I’ve stated before, after the contest I was really hoping to see people continue to produce labels, and it’s been great seeing that fulfilled and being able to follow your labels. I figured I might as well finish off the post by stating my favourites and writing briefly what I like about each of them.

1. Hyper Fighting – the colours… well *ahem* shades really pop
on this one and accentuate the finer details.
Great to have a label this cool for what is
essentially the flagship title of the
HyperFlash.

2. Virtual Bowling – just really clean looking. I love the
reflection of the pins on the alley and it
really conveys the polished look they have
irl.

3. VB Wario Land – I wasn’t crazy about this one upon its first
iteration, but once you tweaked it to add the
diamonds in the eyes (and everything else I’m
not going to bother looking up for reference
heheh), I think it really fleshed it out into
something really cool

4. Waterworld – I appreciated how you incorporated the sunset
into the label, as from what I’ve seen from
gameplay, it’s practically omnipresent.
Another awesome label.

Honorable mentions:

Golf – I’ve still got a bit of a soft spot for my Golf label, but
yours is undoubtedly the better label. I really do
like this one.

SD Gundam Dimension War – very simple and clean; I like it. The
same goes for Virtual League Baseball.

Panic Bomber, & Space Invaders V.C. – Your first labels, for the
contest iirc. Very
minimalist designs set to
spacey backgrounds. Though
your earliest, they still
hold up very nicely.

Galactic Pinball – pretty much what I just said.

Thanks again for all the hard work you put into creating all these labels, as someone who made a lot of labels for the contest (a good portion of which would have been a less effort by a decent margin than most of yours), I know how long and arduous the process can feel at times (… but maybe it’s because of how quick I was pumping them out), and we appreciate it!

Cheers, TRM. πŸ™‚

@TRM: Wow, thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words. I’m really happy you enjoy them and I hope others will too. There is of course the possibility to replace them with other labels so that is nice. But for those who can’t be bothered, I think it’s cool that there is at least something.

For me, I think some of the ones I’m most pleased with are: Hyper Fighting, Wario Land and SD Gundam D.W. Those were some of the more challenging ones.

I felt the pressure on Hyper Fighting, haha, but i’m quite happy with how it turned out. When I was looking for inspiration and I found that particular cover art, I knew I had to go for it.

I agree about the V.B. Wario Land label and that the feedback I got definitely improved it. Good stuff!

Funny about the Waterworld label. Before that one I was actually planing on going for a more simplistic look for all the labels, but after I did Waterworld I realized it would be more fun to treat, at least some of them, like mini paintings, but still represent the games in an honest way–even though I took some liberties with some of them. Hopefully they all feel somewhat consistent.

Again, thanks for the detailed feedback on the individual labels, I really enjoyed reading it πŸ™‚

Bound High and Faceball labels.

So I did two more πŸ™‚ This makes it 28 labels in total counting the “default” label and Space Pinball, which is a modification of the Galactic Pinball label. That’s it for a while (I think).

Here’s my latest label. I’ve done an icon as well for the new long format, and will update the first post with that one tomorrow. I plan on doing more labels and icons in the near future.

Edit: For anyone that has a HF32 cart, they’re both available for download via Kevins Dropbox link.

Mumphy, I imagine you like this when you’re working on eInk labels. Amazing.
