Virty the Virtual Boy of course!

It was AWESOME! much better than that silly issue of Nickelodeon magazine I had that was in 3-D

one question I have though: are the games supposed to be really small (picture wise, not story wise)? smaller than the gameboy? is that normal functioning or is my Virtual Boy broken or not set up correctly?

Thankfully there were no lines or scrambling but my IPD dial was kinda stuck at first 😛

also, Virtual Boy, (unlike most games) made me laugh! but not in the “hahaha this sucks! PS3 is the best” way that some haters say, but the “hahaha! this is really fun!” way

and have any of you ever got a sudden extreme happiness (like being a little child ripping open gifts under a christmas tree) while playing Virtual Boy? its the best thing since the Nintendo Gameboy (thanks Mr. Yokoi!)

I admit I only played a few minutes but thats because I’m not really into sports games… I hope to get Wario Land since its more adventure-y and because Wario is my favorite game character

Congrats on playing your VB.

I’m not sure what to say about your screen, be sure to adjust your focus slider and pupil distance knob properly.
When I play my VB, it gives me the perception that I’m looking at a roughly 9″ wide by 6 1/2″ tall screen at about a perceived distance of 1′ 4″ or 1″ 5′ from the screen.

Are you sure you played your Virtual Boy Console, and NOT the Reality Boy or Red Dragon Emulator?…

Hey, good for you that you finally played it :thumpup:

And it’s true that the screen won’t fill out your entire field of vision (like when you’re on front row in a large cinema).

It’s more like holding a GBA up a couple of inches from your nose, it’s supposed to be like that 🙂

Well lets see, I took Virty out of his box, assembled him, put Mario’s Tennis in and plugged the AC Adapter into the controller with the Adapter Tap, switched it on, stuck my head into the visor, adjusted the long bar (focus) and the hard to move circle dial (IPD) and played as Mario 😛

I could’a sworn it was a red headset on a stand with a controller and not my computer 😀

It’s probably all right. It’s impossible for your VB to have a defect that would make the images smaller but look perfect otherwise…

That could only happen if someone replaced the lenses inside the system, which would be unheard of and highly unlikely 😛

Are you wearing thick prescription glasses or something?

Do you have a measuring tape? Could you stare into your VB, with Marios tennis going, and then whip out your measuring tape and tell us about how many inches wide the screen appears to be for you?

My apologies for the emu comment, but the only time I’ve seen a VB with a GB size screen is on EMU.

All 3 of my virtual boys display a 9″ wide screen, 6.5″ tall, and about 1′ 4″ depth to my eyes.

If it makes you feel better, my only “brand new, unused” Virtual boy I bought recently had a left glitchy eye within one day of owning it.

Seriously, welcome to the exclusive club of smart people who aren’t too stuck-up, afraid, or just plain ignorant to play the greatest gaming system in existence (to date, anyway; I reserve final judgment until I get to play, and then develop for, the 3DS :-P)

I hope you can get Warioland soon. It is a great game, whether you’re a fan of Wario or not. I, for one, don’t really like the direction they’re taking the character, lately (but I still want Warioland Shake It!).

But your post kind of makes it out that you were surprised at how awesome this machine is, I mean its not a case of ‘the emperors new clothes’ where we have all been kidding each other and really its a pile of junk and we are just jumping on some kind of retro bandwagon. Of course its awesome and funny and makes us happy, its Nintendo.
Anyway i don’t want to come across negative, I am pleased you have played and plan on playing more, Wario is a top game, keep up the collecting AND playing, play all the games you have or get, even if its only for 10 or 15 mins, i didn’t give baseball much longer than that but i did play it.
I think you should maybe give Tennis another go , its a great little tennis game (I’m not into sport games either but I do like this one) but besides that check out the other characters courts, look into the backgrounds, look around the screen, I love the way that anything you want to look at relating to depth in the screen comes into focus when you look at it (just like real life!) IMO thats the major difference between VB 3D and these ‘3D’ movies they are hyping, you wanna check out the backgrounds in 3D Avatar, oh no you can’t its blurred.
Mmmm think thats about it for now, just have fun with it, VB was made to be played. (that could be my new tag line….)

I think Wario Land is overrated. It is less fun than Galactic Pinball in my opinion but then again I have’t beat it yet. (It’s frustrating at times.) I love the secrets though.

I’m glad you played & enjoyed! You’ve got to try Vertical Force. The scrolling backgrounds in level 4 are mesmerizing. All in all I find it to be a largely underrated game. As for the screen, its supposed to be framed as though you’re looking at a traditional screen, and it probably does seem small if you were expecting it to be a larger image that fills your entire field of view like a true virtual reality simulator (its one of the common misconceptions that put off the industry back in the day. Maybe the ‘Virtual’ should have been kept out of the name?). 3D that crisp doesn’t exist anywhere else, at least until the 3DS is released. Just think about the fact that the image is two rows of 224 LED lights being beamed straight into your retinas… Its fascinating and to this day my favorite display of any kind to look at. Hopefully this is just the beginning of years of fun you’ll have with this one-of-a-kind technology.

Its not that I’m “OH GOSH, Virtual Boy IS good?!?” its just hardly no other videogame or console has ever given such extreme happiness and constant giggling as VB did… it must be magical 😛 (not that other games don’t make me happy but the VB has its own unique fun-ness)

Ahhh I see where your excitement has come from, fair play understandable, and yes it is magical, all done with smoke & mirrors, well the smoke bit is purely optional. 😀

well not all the games are for my Gameboy so its not all because of the leaking batteries, although a few of those gameboy games are with my gameboy in its carry case
