Is this a common spelling mistake in Nintendo games?

It shows when you get first place in Virtual Bowling.

That’s “engrish”. Japanese have problems distinguishing “L” and “R”. Pretty common, not only in Nintendo games.

I highly recommend you check out engrish.com, especially this section.

Heh heh, Virtual Boring.

whats even better is how in samurai showdown it says “Victoly” when you win.

Yes… but when releasing thousands of copies of a game perhaps a basic spell check could be appropriate… 😉

When googling for congraturations I got 480000 hits, many where Asian pages. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be ascii-coded in the binary so I guess I’ll let it slide.
