what you need is a flashboy+. having a flash card for a system is essential. you will be able to enjoy prototypes, homebrew, translations, and hacks. one of my favorite hacks is the mario clash controller fix by dogp, which switches the jump/throw buttons and adds a run button.

Never knew about the patch, nice work DogP

This should be added to a cart version. I would love to see this cooler Mario Clash on a standard cart.
Or have your already existing carts board switched.

Just wondering, I’ve done some research and I couldn’t find anything about while the button configuration has been switched? Can anybody shed any light on this?

i am not sure what you are asking. you used the word “while” so i am confused by what you are asking. are you asking when this patch was released or why it was made?

Description: This patch changes the controller layout to the mario standard by swapping A and B (A jump, B throw) and also puts “run” on both triggers.

in the game B is jump and A is throw. traditional NES mario style, A was jump and B was speed/weapon/etc. so this was switched so that the virtual boy game controls would be more like those found in other mario titles, making them much more familiar.

the run button was originally only assigned to the left trigger. the right trigger doubled as a jump button. it feels much more natural to have the run button on the same side as the jump and throw buttons. i assume this is why it was added to the right trigger as well.

in case you are asking when it was made, the patch release is dated 2010/02/09.

@virtual_link, what are the 7 games that you have? perhaps we can recommend some games you do not yet own?

No I was asking why was the original config different than the standard mario games that’s all.

I’ve never read any statement from anyone on the Mario Clash development team, explaining why they chose the specific button configuration that they did, so I don’t know of an official answer to your question, but it is evident that they wanted to make as much use of the Virtual Boy controller as possible for Mario Clash. I can see why it makes sense to make the L or R button run in Mario Clash, thereby changing the typical Mario Bros. game button configuration where the B button was used both for throwing items and making the player run. The typical Mario Bros. button configuration, thus, didn’t allow a player who was Fire Mario to start running without throwing a fireball, or if the player was already holding an object such as a koopa shell, the player had to keep the B button pressed to keep holding the object and, consequently, always had to be running when holding onto an object. Thus, the Mario Clash button configuration allows the player to hold a shell and change from running to walking without having to keep a button held down and without being forced to throw the held object, so that seems like a reason why the development team would have utilized the L or R button in such a way. Nevertheless, why they chose to make L run and R jump, rather than make both L and R run, is still up in the air. And why they chose to make B jump and A throw, contrary to just about every other Mario game ever made, is also up in the air. It almost seems like they just arbitrarily chose to be different with the A and B buttons for that game.

Thanks Benjamin Stevens, that’s as good as a response as I can hope to get.:)

I’ve been scratching my had over this as well. My best guess is that they assumed the buttons can be identified easier this way when playing blind.

I own the following:
-Mario’s Tennis (USA)
-Mario Clash (USA)
-Virtual Boy Wario Land (USA)
-Teleroboxer (USA)
-Galactic Pinball (USA)
-Red Alarm (USA)
-Virtual League Baseball (USA)

I would really like to get Jack Bros., Vertical Force, VTeris, 3D Tetris, Bound High, Faceball 2000, Panic Bomber, and Insmouse No Yakata

Ya gotta get Bound High. That and Virtual Boy Wario Land are the best commercial games for >B

i agree, you should pick up bound high! and wario land. if you like galactic pinball then you may also enjoy space pinball. the different tables are really fun. you should also check out faceball remastered as soon as it gets a cart release.

Panic Bomber is quite fun. It gets pretty addicting, and some pretty good music in there as well.
Vertical force is pretty good as well, although I didn’t get quite as sucked in as into panic bomber
