Not posted since 2014. Embarrassingly I cooked my vb ribbon too long in oven. Right eye still plays fine but left is completely gone. It had a few bad lines so tried a fix. I gave up

Now I’ve just ordered a replacement working left eye ribbon off of eBay and I’m so excited! Will keep you guys updated on what it does after I’ve put it all back together! Will be more active and invest in a flash boy if it works!

Is the ribbon cable completely gone or separated? If not, it is probably still easy to fix by soldering the cables. Can you show us a pic of the display/ribbon cable?

At the moment the vb is put together will photo later. The ribbon itself has black marks so yeah it’s totally ruined. Don’t know if any of the parts like your profile pic can be reused or salvaged?

Ordered a replacement so just got to wait!

From what I can see, it isn’t a lost cause. But it is a bit hard to judge since I cannot see the end of the cable and if that would still go into the motherboard socket without any issues. If that is no problem, I am pretty sure this one is very much salvageable.

Meh it’s very crispy now lol

I just recently fixed my virtual boy. When you got it out of the oven I assume you still applied pressure to re-affix the ribbon to the display? It doesn’t look too bad in the picture. It even has it’s original bend back, maybe you just have to cook it again? lol I would keep messing around with it, at the very least you now have a ribbon/display that you can practice soldering with.

I am glad to know you can order replacement parts like that, I have never checked.

Parts were from a guy who had a broken vb. I got lucky.

But the vb works great now. This replacement lens ribbon was soldered.

The oven trick worked on the other but will take the guys offer of a permanent fix but for now I’m just excited to have a boxed working vb.

Dude, dont feel bad thats nothing. Check out the horiffic number I did to one of my displays (try not to die laughing). I pulled this stunt several years ago when I first caught wind of the solder fix. I watched a 10 minute tutorial video on youtube for like 3 minutes about soldering displays. Funny thing is, I’ve never soldered a damn thing in my life but somehow still felt very confident I can pull it off. Boy was I wrong…

This has got to be thee most pathetic solder method attempt EVER! I keep it as a constant reminder to leave shit like this to the pros.

Good luck with everything.

Not bad…

Yeah I would not know how to solder anything!

Looks like what happens when you try to do the solder ball method of reflowing, but without any flux whatsoever.

Wowzers! Hey if it makes you feel better, I’ve been going over my perpetually “in progress” Sega Genesis mod project and pulling out 2+ feet of extra wire I had in there. Some of it was disconnected on one end from past experiments, other pieces were so tangled I didn’t notice that they weren’t connected anywhere, other connections were composed of three or more short wires of varying gauges instead of like…one wire :/
