Hey guys, I just bought a VB and found your awesome site. When I first turned it on, the left eye wasn’t working, but within 30 seconds it came on, possibly due to shipping. The problem is, a day later I go to play it again and the right eye has some major glitching. I know there’s already a sticky, but I’m a noob to this thing and just want some advice on what to do with it. I have an old security bit screw driver somewhere, I just can’t find the darn thing. I’m considering returning it to the person I bought it from and trying to buy another one, but I just bought a few more games and stuff so I’m in the hole a little bit of money.

What do you guys think? Should I keep it and try fixing it? Does anyone have any sources on where to buy a bit that will fit this thing? I’m really upset that it’s doing this, I’m starting to regret buying it. Don’t make me regret it, please!

Thanks guys!

The only real way to avoid the glitchy displays is to have them *fixed*. I had a brand spankin’ new VB that I unboxed in the past year, and I got the glitchy eye prob within days. The problem is a flaw in the VB design, the solder joints work lose very easily adjusting the IPD knob after all these years.

You can have it fixed, or return it for another unit that will probably eventually glitch.

You can check the threads on how to fix it, send it to someone to be fixed, or return it.

If it was glitchy the first time you turned it on, I’d return it to the seller for being dishonest. However, the *one day later* thing is a risk for all VB owners, and not really the seller’s fault. The fix is pretty permanent, anyway. Why break your heart twice?

I wish you the best of luck, I keep a spare cheapie beat-up VB as a backup at all times. πŸ˜•

Anyway, welcome to PVB!

Thanks for the reply. I’m not really blaming the seller, even tho they said it works 100% in the auction. Is there anyone on these forums that I could send the cable to, or even the whole unit?

Thanks again.

Hey there welcome to Planet Virtual Boy! 😎 if your looking for repair work try contacting Johnny Phantom here’s his site…

Send him an e-mail he should get back to you. πŸ™‚

I sent him an email, lets see what he says. What’s crazy is I’m usually the one people come to to fix video game stuff and computers, and now I’m the one needing help. I can solder pretty well, but not SMD stuff, I don’t have the hands for it. I would really rather get this thing fixed and working properly so that I can play it and enjoy it rather than have it be a display item on a shelf somewhere.

I hope he gets back to me soon, I’m itching to play some wario land!

I’m probably going to send it in to him. Price sounds reasonable, seems reputable, and the seller offered to pay $25 of it.

AWESOME DUDE! I’m sure you’ll be pleased with his work i’m thinking about sending my Game Boy as it has dead pixels and that’s a cable problem too BUT i have an idea on how to fix it. 😎

I had the same thing, got a brand new virtual boy, left eye was dead then it came back then dead and back again!

Is this guy John reliable? I emailed him the first time and he got right back to me, then I emailed him a couple more times just asking about turn around time, no reply. I mailed it out yesterday and he will be receiving it today, so I emailed him to tell him and he hasn’t even gotten back to me about that. I’m starting to get worried that I just sent my virtual boy to be stolen :(.

Ok, he got back to me finally. He’s got my VB and will work on it soon. I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous, but now that he’s gotten back to me I feel a lot better.

Supposedly he’s all done with my VB and is set to send it back and it’s working like new. I hope it all survives shipping and doesn’t glitch anymore! I’ll let you guys know.

Got my virtual back from John yesterday. It all seems to work fine now, just gonna keep playing it to test it, hopefully all should be well now. Thanks guys!
