my goal is to recreate the virtual boy experience using my vuzix wrap 310. I want to create or pay someone to create a board that has a virtual boy system built onto it.The features that i want are

1.multiple video out ports.

2.original virtual boy controller port.

3.built in battery or battery bay.

4.built in memory for games, homebrew and save files.

5.start up menu to select color if possible or red and black

I’m open to suggestions so comment and tell me what you think about this project.

It would take a substantial redesign to make something like this work. The way the VB displays video is totally different from the way your glasses work.

VB uses a high speed rotating mirror in conjunction with a string of red LEDs to give the illusion of two screens, but in fact at any point in time you are only seeing a 1 pixel wide tower of light. It’s just moving so fast your brain doesn’t realize.

Your best bet would be to rig up some sort of mini computer with an emulator that can support left/right screens, but either way it will be exceedingly difficult.

I (mostly) agree with colesonwilson; it’s not impossible to do what you propose, but it would be both expensive and difficult. Emulation is definitely the answer, in this situation.

Also, your glasses seem to have enough pixels (428 x 240), but they don’t seem to support VGA. The conversion to NTSC or PAL is going to hurt the picture quality a fair bit, even using SVideo (and it seems to only support composite).

OK do you know if there is a emulator that supports left/right. my glasses support VGA,SVGA,S-video, and RCA. I don’t want to change the glasses i want to create a devise that i can connect to my glasses like a gba but virtual boy

mednafen supports side-by-side mode (use “vb.3dmode sidebyside” in the config file).

While there have been a couple of devices made to translate the VB’s graphics signals into NTSC, PAL, and VGA, they’re not really “turn-key” solutions. However, a netbook running mednafen would get the job done easily and fairly inexpensively, though it may be a bit bulky.
