Original Post

I just picked up a well-priced NGCD and am looking for tips on fun games to get. I’m not the biggest fan of fighters, which of course is the bulk of the NG’s catalog it seems. Magician Lord seems like a good platformer, as does Blue’s Travels or something like that.

Also has anyone used that cool looking pad that shipped with the CD models? I’ve held one from a used game store but it was broken…so it felt comfy but I dont know how well it actually works. Thanks πŸ™‚

Any of the Metal Slug games are good bets

I haven’t used one, but the internals sure look cool:

I actually have a few of those vertically-mounted tact switches on hand… hmmm…

Also, +1 for Metal Slug

i love Neo Geo i have about +/- 105 Neo Geo games from pocket / cd /AES
i have a 2 cd ssysteems front loader and toploader
i will say TWINKLE STAR SPRITES and Pulstar are great games
and offcourse the metal slugs are good and payable for the cd ( still want them for my AES collection only own Metal Slug 4 on AES )

I’ve been a member of the ng.com forums for 13 years now. Collection of AES, MVS, Hyper Neo Geo, etc.

Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters, and (if affordable) Iron Clad would be some good go-to titles, but pure awesomeness is limited for NGCD players as it was only really supported up to the original SNK bankruptcy, with numerous key titles (even before then) never making it to disc.

Nevertheless, go check out the news section in the forum some time for a post labeled something like “so ive been working on this for a while…”. May be right up your alley. πŸ™‚

I love my Neo Geo CD. The controllers work great actually. I actually prefer them to the arcade stick for all but fighting games. The directionals have a tendency to die after lots of use, but it’s pretty easy to fix. I posted a how to video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw5ODJA8vXw

Some great games are Aero fighters 2 & 3, Neo Drift out is a great racing game, and as mentioned twinkle star sprites is very unique. Top Hunter is also a pretty good platformer. Plus the obvious slew of fighting games (which pretty much all rock) and the obligatory Metal Slug games (which also rock).

I’d also suggest a controller extension or two, as the cords are pretty short.

Windjammers on the NGCD looks like a really fun head-to-head game. It’s sort of like Pong, but far more exciting and has special throwing moves characters can perform during the game to curve, accelerate, and set the Frisbee on fire.

I don’t own a Neo Geo or the CD add-on, but if I did, Windjammers would be one of the first games I’d get.

You’re right, for being a game based on playing Frisbee, it’s very fun. The controls are very responsive, which, along with the fast paced nature of the game makes it a blast to play.

Iron Clad is a great top down shooter, kind of a different angle which looks kind of trippy at first but it plays just the same as the other ones

I can’t remember if Pulstar was listed, again a great shooter, with the R-type option system going on, and some pretty cool pre-rendered graphics.

If you can read Japanese (or if you wanna try and fudge your way through the game =P) Samurai Spirits RPG is an amazing RPG. It’s a real shame it didn’t get an English release, I would love to play this game through to the end.

yes i alredy had say pulstar πŸ˜‰

I had windjammers on MVS for my Arcade cabinet ( sega new astro city )
this is really a great game to play with friends ( when i have a party its whas Always in the cabinet and evrybody wants to play it

As a platformer game i also like Magican Lord

Neo Geo CD can be a fun machine if you know the “right” software to get.
Loading times are a real problem only when they are not just long but also very frequent.
Unfortunately many fighting vs games suffer frequent loading times because their nature.
However these are the games I usually recommend (quality games, with fine loading times):

Beat’em up:
Sengoku 2
Mutation Nation

Shoot’em up:
Aero fighters 2/3
Last Resort
Pulstar
Twinkle Star Sprites
Viewpoint

Action:
Ninja Commando
Metal Slug 1
Magician Lord
Nam 1975
Top Hunter
Raguy
Crossed Swords 2

Racing:
Neo Driftout

Sport:
Super Sidekick 2
Baseball Star 2
Street Hoop
Windjammers

Puzzle:
Puzzle Bubble
Magical Drop 2

Fighting vs

Fatal Fury Special
World Heroes Perfect
Art of Fighting 2
Samurai Shodown 2
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 (on the long side but the “fastest loading” of the latter fighting vs games)

Games under 55Mb load just at the boot up, after that they are “loading time” free.
Example: Magician Lord, Mutation Nation and Last Resort.
Games with size under 120-130Mb have usually very short loading times.
For NGCD I suggest to pick up only games under 220Mb.
