I wanted to gauge some early reaction to this…

My indie game company is currently planning on releasing an update (unlockable character) to one of our games early next year in honor of the Virtual Boy’s 20th anniversary.

The game is called Warp Wiz, it’s currently available on iOS and Android. We are currently planning to introduce a VB-themed character whose “mega-spell” (unique power) is to flip the game into the 3rd dimension.

Would you guys play this if released? (it’s free) Below are just some rough mocks…

Nice, I like the idea of a VB power up =P

The graphics look nice in either mode, and the idea of having a power-up that changes the “camera angle” is very clever.

One suggestion, though (based on knowing nothing about the game mechanics, so ignore if it makes no sense): Since the wizard is in the middle of the visible area (in this case, the screen) in the 2D mode, you might want to move him “into” the screen in the 3D mode. Otherwise, it’ll probably make the game (whatever it is) harder, since you wouldn’t be able to see over half of the “board” (although I assume there’s some way to pan and/or dolly the “camera”).

The mechanic is that you can tap anywhere on the screen to warp there. You’re trying to collect gems and avoid ghosts. Sounds easy but totally is not. The idea as of now is that this would still hold true in “3d” mode, we are working through the specifics of it. If interested, feel free to try the main game now (sans virtual boy character).

Would anybody play this? I really want to do it, but maybe I can’t justify it if fellow vb nuts are “meh”. Anybody here play mobile games? Lemme know, thanks!

It looks like a good way to kill a little time, but if you make it too fancy, it won’t work on my ancient phone 😛

I’m definitely not your target audience if you want to make money on this, though. I’m a tight-wad, and I usually disable WiFi on my phone when I play games, which disables the ad banners (although that’s not why I do it, it’s just a side benefit ;-))

While I like the idea, I just don’t use my phone to play games. I tried to get into them, but just kept reverting back to my Gameboys and other handheld consoles. I guess I’m more of a ‘button’ guy.

I still use a flip phone (“use” in the loosest sense… I spend about 100 minutes a month on it, with no text/data). So… I won’t be playing the game, but if it flows with the rest of the game, and the 3D view would be a worthwhile power-up, then I don’t see why not add it.

Maybe only a portion of your players will get the reference, but it’s kinda cool when you’re watching or playing something, and there’s some obscure reference that you pick up on, that most people wouldn’t catch. So, people besides us crazy VB fans may enjoy it as well.
