I really hope someone can help me with this problem…

I recently bought a Virtual Boy from a Japanese auction site and got it shipped to the UK through one of the proxy bidder sites in Japan. All went smoothly and the unit is in fantastic condition – apart from one thing!

The spring clip on the stand has popped off and was loose in the box along with a metal spring. I can’t for the life of me figure out how it goes back together!

As you can see from the attached images this is what I’m trying to get back in to place. I’ve tried as many variations of placing the spring and pushing the clip back into it’s slots on the stand as I can think of and it’s driving me crazy!

Please can you help! If anyone can either tell me how it should sit or even better if you can send a photo of how the spring fits.

One last thing – I’m thinking I might even have an incorrect spring. I searched online but the only image I could find didn’t look like the bit of metal I have so this all might be for nothing!

Thanks for reading my rambling rant and I hope someone can come to my rescue!

I cannot completely tell you how to fix it, but to me it seems you have the incorrect spring, unless the US and Jap version have different interchangeable springs (which I highly doubt looking at the spring I have).
I have a spare spring laying around here, just take a look at it.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply and for taking the time to post some images.

Yes it’s very different from the one I have! I can’t imagine they’d change the spring between JAP/US versions.

Is it very obvious/ easy to fit yours back into place on the clip/stand?

Haven’t tried fitting it back into anything to be honest, took it out of a very damaged stand in case I would ever need it. Checked my 100% in order stand, but is too hard to tell you anything off of it and I do not want to break it since it is so sensitive.

I agree with TheForce81, the spring you have looks like either a homemade or found replacement (which helps explain why it would pop out in the first place). I don’t have a loose spring, but from what I can see of the one in my stand, it looks more like the one TF81 posted than it does yours.

I had my stand apart once, and IIRC, I think I put it back together by just snapping the clip in place (with the hinge pins in their respective holes) and pushing the spring into the gap underneath (behind the part you press with your thumb) until it popped into place. The curved part goes in first, so the inside of the spring can be seen if you look into the aforementioned gap. With the stock spring (as seen in TF81’s photos), the widest part goes toward the moving part of the clip, and the complex folded part goes toward the main body of the stand.

Guys thanks so much for all of your comments – they’re really helpful to me.

I think you’re right it must just be a found bit of metal that the seller had pushed in that doesn’t really work.

I’ll look around to see if I can buy a proper one or if not I’ll try and fabricate one from a sheet of metal!

Thanks again, this website is great, I’m a frequent visitor but I only just signed up to post this question and I’m so glad I did.
