Ever since the Virtual Boy was released, I was fascinated with the concept of the system. A 3D experience from a Nintendo system? How could a young boy not be intrigued by Nintendo’s original venture into 3D gaming?

Unfortunately, I was never able to get one when I was a kid. The only way I got to play NES was going over to my friend’s house to get my Super Mario or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fix. I only ever got to bask in the SNES’s graphical superiority when I’d get a haircut – my local barber also rented video games and would let you “test” the games while you waited to sit in the chair.

Of course, my brothers and I begged our mother for a Virtual Boy for Christmas. That Virtual Boy was never under the tree that year. However, we did finally get an SNES after Christmas, as it made it easier for three boys to share. As we all know, the Virtual Boy died soon afterward, but my fascination still persisted.

Present day, I’ve owned nearly every Nintendo system – minus the Wii U and Virtual Boy. Lately, though, I had gotten the Virtual Boy itch again, and started looking up more information about the system.

So imagine my surprise when my wife asked me to test out my Christmas present. A Nintendo Virtual Boy. Mind you, I’ve never even touched one before. Seeing the Wario Land intro after all these years in its 3D form was surreal. I’m waiting until Christmas to actually play it, but I’m stoked to finally have one of my own.

Since I’m close to that day, I thought I’d join the ranks here and participate in the Virtual Boy community.

Welcome to the forum! I enjoyed the story, somewhat reminiscent to my past, whenever I wanted to experience games other than super mario I relied on my friends. Somehow I totally missed the Virtual Boy until like a few years after it was discontinued. Even then I gave up the opportunity to get a N64 instead, since I knew way more about it and all my friends already had one.

Really cool you got one for Christmas, I’m sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy it 🙂

I just got my hands on one! Had a friend do the soldering on the wires for the display. Plays like brand new. Just have to get my hands on a stand for it. Doesnt give me headaches as well. I play Wario Land for 45 minutes. I LOVE IT!

Congrats on getting the system finally! You’re gonna love it! The community for it is fantastic. The guys here are super nice and helpful 🙂

Thanks guys! Seems like the best location to learn more about the system. I was pleasantly surprised when I tested the system and found both screens to be in perfect working order and no strange noises from the mirror mechanisms.

And speedyink, the N64 is still one of my favorite systems. Just so many quality games for it.

I always thought the GameCube controller was the most ergonomic option from Nintendo, but I think the Virtual Boy is potentially better. Everything is placed perfectly- for my hands at least. Kind of a shame they didn’t make an FPS for it.

My wife caved from the excitement of giving me everything and had me open it all yesterday – the system and 5 games: Wario Land, Mario Clash, Mario Tennis, Teleroboxer, and Red Alarm. The quintessential starter pack! Not going to lie, I only made it past the first opponent in Teleroboxer by button mashing.

Ironically I think I have more VB games than N64 games =P

I always thought the Gamecube controller was inspired by the VB controller. They’re both very comfortable and the same sorta style. Also, check out Faceball 😉

I have a couple more N64 than VB games, but that’ll probably change soon!

Nintendo definitely took inspiration from the VB controller, but I’m not sure they’d admit it.

I’ll be checking out Faceball as soon as I get my hands on a FlashBoy+. My goal is to enjoy all of the games on the actual hardware.

Yeah, that is a good story. I had some family and friends over to see Star Wars, and they tried out my VB. They liked it, and thought the controller was ahead of its time.
