As title says, I would like to see some kind of emulator running on VB….a NES emulator perhaps ? πŸ˜‰
Just wondering…has VB the horsepower required to see and play at decent speed ?

Perhaps a GameBoy emulator would be closer to what would be possible…

DogP did port a Game Boy emulator to VB a few years ago, but it was extremely slow and unplayable. It could probably be optimized more though…

Yeah, I ported gnuboy and it was horribly slow… even with optimization, I’d be VERY surprized if it could run full speed. IMO if you wanted GB, or really any other emu, do it like the Super Gameboy, with hardware to run the system on the cart, and the VB for controls, display, sound, etc.

I see… I already have a Gameboy Player for my GameCube. Nintendo released a “Gameboy cart player” for every console she made, except for VB !…another proof how much Ninty hated(s) VB ! :rolleyes

What about a single arcade emulator (like Galaxians), using MAME arcade roms ?

Well, you could probably emulate some very old arcade games, though it’d probably be much easier to just rewrite the game for the VB. I’d be surprised if it could emulate Galaxian though (Z80, like the Gameboy, plus lots of other random hardware)… I’m thinking more along the lines of Sprint, Drag Race, Night Driver, etc. Yet those games could be rewritten for the VB very easily, and in very little ROM space (and with new cool VB 3D features). Emulation is really just very inefficient.

Yup, and to be honest, that’s what I’d really like to see on the VB…more homebrew games. I am aware of the time it takes to develop such a thing though, so I eagerly await the competition results in November.

Such a good starting idea for those thinking of entering…remake an arcade classic for VB!!

…anyone remember the old vector graphics Star Wars arcade game? Come on, who didn’t play Red Alarm for the first time and think of that badboy?!

Oh yeah Space Harrier, as i think Runnerpack already mentioned, if the effects could be pulled off right it would look great in 3D VB style.

Could the source for it be modded/tweeked to suit VB?
Or am i being a wee bit optimistic there.

Now you’re talking HT!
Space Harrier would be fricken awesome!
Who was it who brewed up that Out Run styled game? Maybe they’ve got the skills?
😎

Hated? The VB didn’t even get past the first generation of games before it flopped… It wouldn’t have made sense to create something like the Super Gameboy that early on.

I think Gameboy emulation through software should be possible, even if many tricks (and per-game tricks) WILL have to be exploited. Heck, look at what the DS can do with its ~90Mhz! Almost full SNES emulation.

It doesn’t have much to do with the 3D Graphics, but I think that the controller layout is perfect for Bangai-O. Unfortunately, I don’t know what kind of load that many bullets would put on the VB. The Dreamcast and DS can barely handle that game!

Oh, and I second Space Harrier. I was thinking of doing it for the contest, but I know nothing about Affine Mode, so I’m going for something a little simpler instead.

Well according to wikipedia :
“Camerica had the Game Boy to NES developed by Biederman Design Labs, which appeared similar to the Super Game Boy”, but I don’t think that was ever released.

Or, if you like DIY stuff:

Original NES plays Game Boy games?

There actually IS a GameBoy player for NES now:

Only $130, we should ask him for a Virtual Boy version…

See, when I started reading this thread, I thought you were saying that Nintendo should’ve made a VB -> SNES cart, not a GB -> VB cart. Honestly, I think GB -> VB would be kind of moot, since VB is techinically part of the Game Boy family (Although I suppose one could argue for backwards compatibility, although lately Nintendo hasn’t seemed to care.)

The thing is, the VB’s screen has about the same brightness display range as a Game Boy (4 shades, correct me if I’m wrong) so it would be just like a Gameboy that…. wasn’t portable? Aside from that, I suppose you could argue that the games could be augmented with “3D” effects, although it would probably end up something like the “color” that the GBC added into old GB games.

Just my 2 cents.
