Maybe this sounds stupid, but I think its a good idea.

-If you connect the two legs of your stand with a pipe-cleaner, right at the top of the A-arms, it will prevent them from ever spreading too far and cracking the stand in the crotch.

And if anyone knows where the artifact is on level 5 in Wario I would love to know.
