Original Post

i hope this is the right section to post this thread because this is interesting!

Anyways, there is a kickstarter project that is currently live right now by clicking the link below:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662894668/vanguard-valkyrie

Now you may be asking why the heck am I posting this shameless KS project on here? well here’s why!

Well it turns out that there is an INSANE stretch goal for $1,000,000 dollars (yes 1 million dollars lol) for a virtual boy port!

I think we all know that this stretch goal will NEVER be met but I would love to know if it is even possible to port “vanguard v” to the virtual boy? I know the colors won’t be the same and among other things but still, is this even possible?!?

Anyways, I just thought I had to share this with you since i thought it was pretty crazy to see this out of the blue!

I also sent the project creator a message to see if they could come up with a screenshot or some type of placeholder of what the game would look like in virtual boy mode!

cheers!

UPDATE!

Just got a message back from the project creator very quickly after asking him for any type of screen shot of the game in virtual boy mode, I also asked if the game was coming to other consoles as well. here is his response copy/pasted:

“Vanguard V is coming to Mobile, PS4, Windows, Mac, and Linux. I used to have stretch goals for all of those platforms, but got enough external support with toolchains and hardware that I no longer need to hire a team for each platform.

We have a running ROM in Virtual Boy at the moment, but its very early. More news on that soon.

I am currently working on a mobile demo to share. Should be available in a day or two.”

I’ll update this when the project creator has more info to share!

It’s really cool that they recognize VB as the spiritual predecessor of today’s home VR systems, but I’m sure they’re not expecting to ever get that much money, which is probably why they’re setting the bar that high.

If they do get it, they will probably spend as little as possible on VB support and instead concentrate on the other (much more attractive) goals. Although I do wonder how they’re going to make it work. Maybe they want a million because they know it’s going to make the development so much longer to make it VB compatible. Maybe they will need to manufacture their own cartridges with extra RAM and a faster CPU. πŸ™‚

I think it’s really cool that they have plans an even an early prototype for a Virtual Boy ROM.

Unfortunately I think $1 million is kind of a long shot..

I’d back the game if I had or was planning to get a VR headset, but I think the VB will be as close as I get to VR for a long time.

I’m not sure what to think of this. Basically, they say that they need $198,000 to make the rift/morpheus game and that making the VB version would cost them another $802,000. I don’t think that is realistic. If they would have said that they would need another ~$100,000 it might have made sense to motivate the community to back.

However, right now it is not more then a bad joke.

Hrms hard to to have excitement on this. Looks like he plans to make a virtual boy game no matter what kickstarter goal he has.

BUT, i’m going to curb my enthusiasm until I see screen shots and movement on a virtual boy or emulator.

I think it’s pretty obvious, the VB stretch goal is a million dollars because they don’t intend to actually do it. They know funding won’t get that high.

Just got another message back from the project creator and they look pretty serious about the virtual boy stretch goal!

Here is another follow up message I got in return from the project creator:
===============================
“I’d be happy to bring the title to 3DS / Wii U. My office is a library of gaming history from 1977 on up. The message maybe a bit mixed since the focus is squarely on VR.

BTW, there will be an article about how detailed and serious we are on VB support hitting the net very shortly.

As unlikely as it is that I’ll reach the stretch goal, we are 100% serious about it. Me and my crew are no strangers to console development young and old”
===============================

I am looking forward to seeing more news about the virtual boy stretch goal because I seriously thought it was a joke because sometimes KS project creators add a silly stretch goal that is in the millions of dollars. However, this could be different!

I will update again as soon as they release more info via article or video. Unless someone else gets more info about this then reply away!

cheers!

a game like this would do great things for raising awareness about the virtual boy. it may even spark interest in homebrew development. at the very least, it will put our beloved console and probably this site in the news for a time. i don’t see the harm in a little reeducation. =)

Exactly! Plus, there has been some crazy KS projects where the stretch goals were reached and beyond. Also, even if the stretch goal is not met, I bet they would still try to release it in the future when they have free time but who knows!

That would be super awesome! I’ll pitch in my small chunk. πŸ™‚

Article on RtoVR includes shoutouts to PVB and Guy Perfect! πŸ™‚ http://www.roadtovr.com/vanguard-v-kickstarter-stretch-goal-nintendo-virtual-boy-version/

I’ve reached out to Justin and if/when they start production, maybe they can make use of some of the libraries I’ve written.
