No surprise, but Tom’s Hardware has an article on the top 21 game consoles that crashed & burned, VB is in there of course. Pretty interesting read, and the new Ouya looks quite interesting as well!

I think this article actually talks about the Virtual Boy’s commercial failure in a respectful way, which is nice and seems to be a rare thing.

Interesting article… although I think it might be a little premature to call the Vita a total flop, given that it’s still being sold and actively developed for. It hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, sure, but it’s building a respectable library.

I’d also never heard of the TurboExpress before… interesting stuff. I’m kind of a portable game aficionado… further investigation definitely required. 🙂

Lots of obscure thing I never heard of. And I never realized how few Atari Jaguars were out there! And to think I found one complete in box just last night! … Not that it worked. =c

It’s nice to note that they were respectful of the VB in a sense, although I always argue about how subjective the “Headache” excuse is. I’ve shown the VB to my entire game club at college and only one person had a legitimate problem with it.

The most awesome part of the TG Express (still have mine), is that it used the same card cards as the TG-16 console, so you did not have to buy games twice…

I am a PC Engine fan, so I used to have a PC Engine GT(Japanese handheld version). It’s a lot of fun. Be warned though. The batteries maybe last 4-5 hours, and you will definitely need a rechargeable battery pack. Also, mine was very expensive. I got mine with 4 games for $250, and I resold it later. A lot of fun, but even bigger than a GameBoy.

For the VB they added that bit at the end about gamers getting sick. I’ve still yet to talk with anyone who got headaches or nausea from playing the VB.

I always assumed stuff like that was Nintendo covering their butts with a warning label, and people over-reacting in the extreme (the game tells me I might get a headache, OH MAN I’VE GOT A HEADACHE NOW).

When I first showed my (very nearsighted) fiancee my 3DS, though, she complained almost immediately that it hurt her eyes to look at the 3D effect. I spent a while with her trying to help her find the all-important viewing “sweet spot,” and even once she found it, it was unpleasant for her.

To be honest, the Virtual Boy did give me minor headaches when I first played it ever, and I even had the focus and IPD Adjustment Dial set correctly for my eyes. Nevertheless, I thought that the system was so cool that I kept playing it anyway and taking breaks when my eyes and/or head started to hurt. After playing the system for about a total of 10 or more hours across a few separate occasions, my body became accustomed to it, and now I can sit down and play it for however long and never get the headaches or eye strain. I think its 3D effect is just something that strains some people and doesn’t strain others, but it definitely seems that one can accustom himself to it if he keeps at it.

The article also mentioned the uncomfortable headphones. I actually have to agree with it. To this day, I can’t keep my official Virtual Boy headphones in my ears for more than an hour without my ears hurting. Nevertheless, I love the stereo sound being right in my ears for many games, so I usually just continue to play through the pain. It would make sense for me to buy more comfortable headphones, but then I’d be playing a Virtual Boy without official Virtual Boy headphones… and to me, that would just be so wrong.

Where is the Odyssey 2? Hard to believe it isn’t there since the Jaguar is listed. I guess its popularity in Europe kept it off the list?

I’m also missing the Amiga CD32 on the list…
