Original Post

I’ve been pretty quiet lately but it’s only because I’ve been crazy with foster kittens and fixing display issues on my current VB. I scored 2 beaten up systems for parts/repair and one is gonna go to fixing my original and the other is gonna be converted into a Virtual Girl. Thanks to some member’s here that created the VB font and some members that gave the inspiration, it looks like it might just happen. I have a spare controller that I want to add the logo to. Here’s a quick concept:

Very nice mock up indeed. Too bad you can’t change the colors of the LED’s

That would be sweet if it were possible. I contemplated making it all pink and white but the black and pink is easier/looks better. I don’t want it looking too much like a Barbie product lol.

I wanna buy a poor shape VB and drill holes and add brackets to make a permanent head strap then I’ll removed the stand mount and any weight that’s not necessary.

If it becomes a reality, you will have to share some high quality pics of the finished product with us. 🙂

If you don’t want to give it a solid color…

I remember Dorsi had a company hydro dip it.

Pretty amazing job. But, whatever you DO ..ahh do…please post plenty of pics 🙂

Plenty of pictures will follow 🙂 My biggest issue right now is sizing the new logo correctly (and hoping the post office delivers the VB to the right house this time).

I like the plasti-dip idea and have done it in the past with my 3DS. I liked it but I might try the paint this time around.

Get some custom lenses made so instead of looking through red it will bring the shade down to a purple. I think its doable.

I think that could work to effectively change the tone purple. 🙂
blue lenses plus the red color LEDs would equal purple.

You both may be onto something. I might have to look into that

If you do decide to get custom lenses please let us know where you got them.

And unknowingly you have made a pun [“I may have to look into that”)…In more ways than one:-D

Haha I didn’t even notice that. I will search around to see if I can find a place to do custom lenses. If I have no luck, I have a vinyl shop that could help me cover the lenses with a blue overlay to make purple.

I’m also working on a custom GBA using a spare my sister-in-law gave me. I want to get the backlight kit for it too. Why do I have to have such an addicting and expensive hobby? lol At least my husband can’t complain because I could be like other women and spend it on useless things like purses and shoes. At least video games we can enjoy together and eventually our child when we decide to have one.

Color mixing doesn’t work like that here. If you change the red lenses to something else, you won’t see any color, because it’s subtractive.

Even if the light inside was also replaced to the same color as the lenses?

10 points for creativity.

It’s not a simple matter of changing the bulb. The reason Virtual Boy is red in the first place is because that was the cheapest color to manufacture. Take a look at this:

That’s a photograph of the LED array that produces the images for one of the eyes (meaning there are two of these in the system). It’s a single column of 224 red LEDs, and they’re in total only about a centimeter long at most.

Changing the color of that isn’t something you can do with a soldering iron and big dreams. (-:

Passing red light through a purple filter will result in red light coming out the other side. You could alter the wavelength of the light with some unidentified metamaterial, but you’d have to sacrifice something in return, such as the strength of the light passing through the other side.

Here are some pictures of my project so far:

Seriously sweet Retro! keep up the nice work! My six year old son saw your work and said “I wish they made a Virtual Kid it would be blue and black”. so your work is inspiring us all.;-)

Thanks morintari! A Virtual Kid with that color scheme would look so awesome! Blue’s my favorite color and if it was more of a “girl’s color” I would have chosen it for the Virtual Girl. Maybe you and your son can do a joint project to make a virtual kid 🙂

I touched up the controller a bit until I can get my printer working so I can do the logos (my husband took the power plug for the damned thing and doesn’t remember where he put it lol).

The pictures don’t really let you see too well but the power switch sticker you see when you slide it has also been changed from red to pink.

Maybe someday Retro. If I did a Virtual Kid mod I would have to ask a ton of questions. Just please keep your process documented OK.
