Contact Information ******************************************************************************* I. Introduction This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for the Virtual Boy game Space Squash. It contains information on how to play the game and a mini-review. This game was only released in Japan, but will work on an American Virtual Boy without any modifications. Most of the text having to do with actual gameplay is in English, but all dialogue is in Japanese. I have been trying to teach myself Japanese, but it is going very slowly. What little I have translated will be shown under the word TRANSLATION with the Romanized form as well as the meaning in English. If you see the word MISSING after the Romanized form, it means I don't know the translation for that word or phrase. If I mess any of the translations up or you know what the MISSING parts mean, please send me an email to let me know. ******************************************************************************* II. Adjusting the Virtual Boy and Auto Pause If you have never used a Virtual Boy before, here is how to adjust the screen. On the screen that says 'Virtual Boy' and has squares in the corners, turn the dial on top until you can see all four squares. Then use the sliding bar until the screen is in focus. When the auto pause is turned on the game will automatically pause after about 15 minutes so you can rest your eyes. TRANSLATION During the auto pause, it says: "onegai: kenkounotame, shibarakunoaida kyuukeiwo tottekudasai. STARTbotasowo osuto, gu-muwo saikaidekimasu." MISSING ******************************************************************************* III. Getting Started On the title screen, press Start to begin playing. Press Select on the title screen to display more choices. Use the left control pad to highlight your choice, then press Start or A to select it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Game Start Selecting this will begin the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Training This is where you can practice. You will first be shown the controls (in Japanese of course). Press a button to start. You will be served 30 balls. The goal is to hit one of the five objects with each shot. After training is over it shows your hit rate. It will then say something in Japanese, press a button to return to the title screen. Note: There is no way to end the training early, you must go through all 30 balls before you exit. TRANSLATION The word next to the number shown after each shot is "nokori", which means remaining. After I finished training, it said "shugyouga tarin!". MISSING ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Config Mode This is where you can change the game options. Press up or down on the left control pad to highlight a option, then press left or right to change it. Press A to exit this screen and save the changes you made. Press B to exit and cancel any changes made. ............................................................................... 1. Level This is the game's difficulty level. This can be set to Easy, Normal, or Hard. The higher the difficulty level the more HP your four main opponents will have. They will also be stronger, faster, and smarter. ............................................................................... 2. Back This changes the look of the room where the matches take place. This option can be set to A Type, B Type, or C Type. In A Type you can't see through the walls. In B Type there are now clear strips you can see through. In C Type, there are just lines showing the boundaries. Play around with these and see which one you like best, I prefer C because this allows you to see more of the moving stars in the background. ............................................................................... 3. BGM This option toggles the background music On or Off. ............................................................................... 4. Match This is how many points that need to be scored to win a match. This can be set to 2, 3, or 4 points. This number is also how many misses you have in a boss match. ............................................................................... 5. Continue This is the number of times you can continue. This can be set to 3, 5, or 7. ............................................................................... 6. Brightness This lets you change the brightness. It can be set to Dark, Middle, or Bright. There really isn't much difference between the three settings. ******************************************************************************* IV. Basic Gameplay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Object The object of the game is to defeat your opponent by reaching the target score first. You get a point when you get a ball past your opponent or you lower his HP to zero. Your opponent gets a point when a ball gets by you or your HP is reduced to zero. After each point, both players' HP will be refilled. Your power gauges will be at the same level. During boss stages, your goal is to reduce the boss's HP to zero. Unlike other matches, you only have to reduce his HP to zero once to win the match. Instead of points, you have misses. When a ball gets by you or you run out of HP, it counts as one miss. After a miss, the boss's HP is refilled. In the lower right corner are the number of misses. Miss that many times and you lose the match. The number of misses is equal to the number of points needed to win a regular match. During bonus stages, your goal is to knock out all of the panels. If you win a match, you move on to the next stage. If you lose, you can continue. You have only a limited number of continues. When you continue, you keep any upgrades you have collected, but your score will be reduced to 0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Controls You move the Peatron with the left control pad. Press left on the right control pad to swing with your left, press right to swing with your right, and press up to swing over your head with both hands. Press and hold down on the right control pad to charge up your power gauge (PG). When your PG is full, press R or L to use your power, you choose from one of four to use before each match. Press Start during a match to pause. Press Select while the game is paused to bring up the adjust screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Powers The Peatron has four different special powers that can be used to help win matches. You choose one before each match. Press up or down while on the pre-match screen to switch powers, yours will be on the left. Note: The names of the powers are written in Japanese. The powers are in the same order I have listed them here and I have also attempted to recreate the Katakana characters in ASCII. ............................................................................... 1. Shoot This power allows you to hit the ball harder than normal. Press R when you would normally swing at the ball to spin around and whack it hard. This name looks like: _ _ | _ _|_ _" | | _ _ _ _ _ _ |\ /|\ _ _ _ _ | | / _ | \ / | \ | | / _ _/ _ _| | / | \ / |/ ............................................................................... 2. Speed This power will increase your speed temporarily. This name looks like: _ _ _ _ o / | / | " /\ | / _ _ _ _ |\ / \ |/ | \ / \ |_ _ _ | ............................................................................... 3. Shield This is definitely the coolest looking power. Activating this power will create a force field behind you for a few seconds. This will deflect a ball that gets by you. This name looks like: _ _ | | | " _ _ _ _ _ _ | | |\ / | | / | \ _ _/ / |/ | ............................................................................... 4. Homing This power is a MUST for boss matches. Press R when you would normally swing at the ball to launch a homing shot that will home in on your opponent. This name looks like: _ _" _ _|_ _" | | _ _|_ _ ---- \ / | /|\ _ _ _ _ | | /|\ _ _ _ _ ---- \ / / / / | \ | | / / | \ ---- _ _/ / / | \ / |/ / | \ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Powerups You can get powerups from boxes in matches or you can earn them in the bonus stages. To get a powerup from a box, first hit it with the ball. The powerup will then float back. When it hits the back, it will then float in your direction. You have to touch a powerup to get it. The powerups are random and the boxes reappear after each point. ............................................................................... 1. Continue +1 This will give you an additional continue. ............................................................................... 2. Break Block I am not sure what this does. ............................................................................... 3. Full Charge This will completely charge your power gauge. ............................................................................... 4. Bonus Point This gives you extra points to your score (your total score in the upper left, not the score that determines who wins the match). ............................................................................... 5. HP Full This will refill your HP. ............................................................................... 6. Max HP +1 (Life Up) This will increase your max HP by 1. This lasts until the game is over. ............................................................................... 7. Speed Up This will increase the speed of your movement. This lasts until the game is over. ............................................................................... 8. Power Up This makes you hit the ball harder. This lasts until the game is over. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Pre-match Screen On the screen before a match you will see your portrait on the left and your opponent's on the right. At the very top of the screen is the stage name. Under the portraits are the player's special powers, press up or down to change yours. At the bottom of the screen is some text in Japanese. Press A to begin the match. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Post-match Screens After the match you will see a picture of your opponent and some Japanese text at the bottom of the screen. Press A to exit the screen. If you lost the match you will then be taken to the continue screen. On the continue screen there will be two boxes at the bottom with Japanese text. The number you see in the right box is how many continues you have left. Choose the top option in the left box to continue, choose the bottom option to quit. TRANSLATION The one on the left says this: "tsuzukete pureishimasuka? ->hai iie" "Want to play again? ->yes no" The right one says this: "konteinyo- nokori #kai" (where # is a number) "Continues remaining #count" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. General Strategies Here are some general strategies and tips for playing the game: - After you hit the ball, return to the center of the screen, this minimizes the distance you will have to travel to reach your opponent's return shot. - You should be constantly holding down on the right control pad to fill your power gauge, only stop when you are hitting the ball. - Try to hit the ball so it will bounce off walls, this makes it more difficult for your opponent to return it, this is vital to winning matches in small arenas. - I recommend choosing Power when selecting an upgrade after winning a bonus stage, this will give your opponent less time to react to your shots. Speed isn't really necessary and you will rarely run out of HP. - On a similar note, I recommend using Shoot as your special power in all non-boss matches. ******************************************************************************* V. Stages Here is how the areas are set up. There are 15 areas with 5 stages each for a total of 75 stages. Each area has four normal stages, then a boss stage. After the boss you play a bonus stage. After completing an area, you choose between two new areas. You will play a maximum of 4 areas (20 stages) each game. After completing an area, you will choose which of the next two areas you want to play. Press up and down to highlight the one you want, then press A. Since the doors behind him are closed, you have to get rid of all of his HP. If a ball gets behind you, it counts as a miss. The boss's HP will then be restored and you have to start over again. You will see how many misses you have left in the lower right corner (the number of misses you have is equal to the number of points needed to win a regular match). Hit him with Homing shots. When his HP reaches 2, he will move to the center of the screen and become stationary. The segments of his tail will move around him like a pinwheel. Just hit him with two more Homing shots to win. I am pretty sure that he can't attack you, so all you have to worry about is the ball getting behind you. TRANSLATION When you beat him he says "nakanakakubixina tatakaidattanyoro-! shikashi konooresemaga makerunantena ..." MISSING ............................................................................... 6. Bonus Here you get 15 balls to knock out 16 panels. My Top Score My top score is 4,924,520 points. ******************************************************************************* VIII. Game Review This is the best Virtual Boy import game I have played. The main problem is that this game is rare and usually goes for over $80. If you can find this game at a lower price, I would definitely recommend buying it. Pros - This game is a lot of fun. - Excellent graphics and 3D effects. - This game has 75 stages and multiple paths, as well as three different difficulty levels so there is high replay value. - Good play control. - There are a lot of options in the config menu.
