I don’t have the means to grind one of the VB security gamebits, and I don’t have a way of modifying a flathead screwdriver either. I desperately need a way to open my VB so I can fix my glitchy left eye! Is anyone willng to send me a bit/screwdriver/whatever that can open the VB? I woul send it right back to you after I get my VB open.

Cool, that looks like the same bit I ordered, and about the same amount of grinding. I ended up replacing the screws with philips screws though, just because I hate the VB screws. 😎

I recently stumbled across this:

http://www.mod-chip.com/gamecube/gamecube-screwdriver.html

Even if it’s not long enough, it might be easier to modify than the hex-drive bits.

If you need something to open your VB, consider getting one of these and giving us a report of how well it works.

Also, maybe the original manufacturer can be discovered and contacted about making a batch that are long enough for the VB’s screws (someone could probably make a tidy sum on eBay ;-)).

I’m pretty sure the Gamecube uses tri-wing screws like all the other modern Nintendo consoles. So that screwdriver wouldn’t work for VB.

The GC uses the same screws as the VB. I also came across this one: http://www.chollogame.es/epages/61488288.sf//en_GB/http/www.etracker.de/es_ES/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61488288/Products/ngc_screwdriver , but that’s not in the US, so it’s not particularly helpful to me.

There’s others as well, but not for sale, like: http://gamechn.com/productsview.php?id=201&proid=827 . If you look harder, you can probably find them. Just hopefully they’re not made of cheap metal like a lot of the bits.

If it’s the same tool as sold here (it looks the same), the shank is either 52 or 56 mm long, which isn’t long enough to get at the two deepest screws.

Hehe, I stand corrected. I was looking at several Gamecube drivers that said tri-wing in the description. Guess they are wrong, but that’s pretty typical of those Chinese knockoffs. *Edit* From what I remember, I’m almost positive the GC controllers use tri-wing screws. So that’s probably what I was thinking of.

I thought it might be, but if you break the plastic off, the shank inside might be long enough. At most you’d have to grind off the “ears” they sometimes add to keep the shank from rotating in the handle, put it should be milder steel than the hex bits (they usually only harden the “business end”).
