Original Post

I finally made a post about this game. This is far from final, so I will post an updated one with more levels and an ending on Halloween Eve (right before the deadline!) Just wanted to gauge people’s reactions to a new game for this competition.

I’m thinking about making the sub, octopus and torpedos the same size whether in the foreground or the background. My question is, would it be easy to tell whether it’s in the background or the foreground on a real Virtual Boy? Cuz you can’t tell in Reality Boy, while Mednafen changes the blue to red and vice versa, and I don’t have any 3D glasses so I don’t know. Also, I don’t have a FlashBoy, so I can’t test it. I’ve attached the “fixed” version here, what I have been doing is making a whole new smaller sprite for the background, but it seems as though you can cheat by using it to maneuver the smaller passageways instead of what I intended it to. So anyone with a FlashBoy, could you please test this to see whether it’s easy or not to tell whether it’s in the foreground or background?

I meant to comment on this when I saw it a couple days ago, but I guess I forgot to hit submit. That evil jellyfish (er, you said it was an octopus?) reminds me of Evil Otto from Berzerk. πŸ˜› It’s pretty fun, I quit around level 6 when the anaglyph glasses started to hurt my eyes. The one problem I had was with the foreground/background thing. I haven’t played your latest version, but in the last one it was really hard to tell whether I had to be in the foreground or background to avoid walls. Like you said, maybe it would work better on a real VB.

I haven’t even gotten my engine working yet… I guess this entry means I’ll have to pick up the pace! πŸ˜€

engin? and I was expecting FULL GAMES for the competition, oh well lets see what more people come up with

You think writing games is easy? Then go make one yourself.

Who knows, maybe Fwirt’s engine will make writing certain types of games easier. After all, that’s what game engines are for.

For me its as hard to make a game with or without some engins
Unless you use visual basic or something easy then very few people will make vb games

Take the last competition, the winners all made games because no one really cares for engins unless its made for some 5 year old so we noobs can make games easy πŸ˜›

An engin might make 10 people happy, a game maybe 50+

Virtualpong looks good thought πŸ™‚

I think it is definitely a good idea to keep the sub and other things smaller when in the background. It makes it alot easier to see, and that is how all the commercial games do it (wario land, vertical force etc.)

This last build is a step back, in my opinion.

Sadly I agree..about the step back thing.. :rolleyes

I agree. In my opinion the older version looks better. Tanks for your Gosub 3d!!

OK, I changed it back to the sub, torpedos and octopus being smaller.

Any full game starts with an engine test (well, after the idea, naturally). Then a full game may or may not grow out of it. This actually also counts a fair amount for commercial games.

I want screenshots!

You could just download the latest version and play it in mednafen… What do you need pictures for when you can have actual gameplay?

Chris, can you please upload the complete source code of the last version you posted (gosub3d20101008.zip)? It only includes the main C file, but should come with all the #included *.h files in order to be complete.

Yeah, sorry. I was just looking through that, that’s a lot of .h files I used!

I just tried this on my FlashBoy Plus, and I like it! It runs perfectly as well!
The only comment I have in terms of an addition is perhaps make the sub a bit faster?
Other than that, good job!

Just tried it from the competition pack, very nice looking. A little too extreme perspective to my liking I never got my eyes to get used to it and see it the right way.
