If you like VR (and I suspect that you might ;-)), watch this video!

Given the companies they already have on-board, and the amount this campaign has made above it’s goal, this thing is GOING to happen. Even at $300 it’s very cheap for an HMD, and they can hopefully get the final MSRP even lower than that.

If the Wii-U doesn’t support this in every game, Nintendo will have a new “biggest blunder” to replace the VB. Mark my words!

That looks awesome. I can’t wait to play Doom 3 on one of those. This may be a dumb question but is this going to be it’s own system, or will you need to plug it into a system to play it?

The impression I got is that it’s just an LCD monitor and motion tracker (most likely in the form of a USB or, eventually, Bluetooth HID). Software support will likely be limited to PCs at first, but the hardware is probably compatible with the big three game consoles (and a few older ones).

It is a really exciting project. I have been thinking about donating for quite some time now. For 300$ (+30$ for international shipping) they send you a developer kit which includes a prototype of the actual hardware and access to the development resources.

Regarding the technical questions. The FAQ on Kickstarter basically says that it is more or less an 3D-Display with motion detection. Right now they focus on PCs, Consoles are planned for the future. The FAQ says that the only connection needed is DVI (or HDMI). I am not sure how motion data is transmitted though.

This thing looks awesome. I have donated a last minute $333 last night, now can’t wait for the Oculus to arrive in December – if they can adhere to their schedule now that they fundraised 10 times their initial goal. A friend of mine will be receiving his Leap Motion prototype dev kit in December as well, which ia a new motion tracking system. Maybe we’ll try to combine both systems.

Anyway, I hope Ryphecha got an Oculus Rift as well and will add a special display mode to Mednafen. 😉

Actually, with that kind of cash, they should be able to get these things on shelves in Best Buy within the deadline!

I’m not sure using that Leap thing without a screen would be that much fun… But, it’s worth a try!

As for Mednafen support: it looks like the OR just uses standard side-by-side mode. You might need to tweak the scale and positioning, but I think Med. already has options that should at least get you close.

Skip to 3:24 to see the Oculus Rift being used with Virtual Boy emulation:

Thats awesome that VB emulation works on the Rift. It’s going to be great to use a VR headset that plays VB aswell as other immersive games.
