Hello Planet Virtual Boy!!

I’m a long time lurker, but first time poster. πŸ™‚

The struggle has been real in trying to obtain a CIB version of all the Virtual Boy games. I’m extremely envious of all of you that have a complete set!!
(I just recently got that ever evasive Blockbuster Mario Tennis Box!! That completes my NA Official release set!)

This last year at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, I happened to stumble across the SD Gundam reproduction. Of course, without hesitation I purchased it! Having this now made me want an NA/English box version of all the remaining Japanese games.

I tried searching around to see if anyone had already done so, but couldn’t find anything… SO I’ve taken it upon myself to do it!

I currently aim to do the following:
– Virtual Fishing [ (!) ]
– Insmouse No Yakata [ (!) ]
– Space Invaders
– Virtual Bowling
– Virtual Lab
– V-Tetris

Here is a link to a preview of the completed ones so far!

I even made cart labels for these as well! πŸ™‚

Unfortunately, I have no means or even knowledge in getting it printed. Last time I went to a print shop to get something printed for another project… they yelled at me for trying to abuse copyright or something… T_T

None the less, I wanted to share these with you guys and join the community! πŸ™‚

Enjoy!

(P.S. : These boxes are based on the Virtual League Baseball box. It was the only extra I had that I was willing to flatten and scan as reference. Hehe.)

Thanks RBF!

Next up is the Virtual Bowling manual! πŸ˜€

(PS: if your name is based on the band then you’re awesome)

Oh yes virtual bowling would be awesome! And yep, RBF is my favorite band πŸ˜€

I was never able to finish the manual for Virtual Fishing because there wasn’t a fully translated ROM to take screenshots from, but now thanks to Thunderstruck I’ve been able to finish it!!

Woo!

Virtual Fishing is now fully ready for CIBs. πŸ˜€
(Box, Manual, Label, and ROM)

Cool!

Now complete is the manual for Virtual Bowling! πŸ˜€

Hey everyone! Sorry for falling off the face of the Earth!
Just been busy with wild ride called life.

Anyways, I found some time to continue working and have finished the Space Invaders manual!… well… almost.

It turns out I’m REALLY bad at this game. Haha. So, I’m struggling to get some of the screen shots. Would anyone be willing to help me get them?

Here are the ones I’m missing:

The Auto Pause Notice (On / Off)
It’s still in Japanese so I can’t screen shot
(I just used another games screenshot for this, but if it ends up looking different I’ll need that screen shot)
The Auto Pause Screen.
This screen also has some Japanese text on it, but I can’t create a new one because I can’t even get it to show up!! πŸ™
Splitting Invaders.
I’ve never made it past round 2… so I haven’t ever seen these guys.
Crazy Rainbow Shot.
I’m bad and can’t make it this far…
Engine Trouble.
I have no idea how to even get this one…
Time Attack Select
I made new art for this! See attached!
Score Attack Select
I made new art for this! See attached!
Congratz Screen
This screen pops up so fast I just can’t grab it!! πŸ˜•

That’s all that’s left!

I went ahead and made new sprites for Time Attack and Score Attack. Translating the Japanese text underneath! πŸ˜€
Maybe we can get our boy ThunderStruck to slap them in?
*wink wink smooch smooch*

If anyone wants to help, I’d love it!
Please post them at 2x resolution (768×448), Red pixels, taken from Mednafen.

Thanks for your help!

So to clarify about the auto pause screens, do you simply want screenshots of the original Japanese screens and English translations for such, and then you’ll be making your own new artwork by modifying those screenshots?

Here’s what I managed to get so far. All screenshots were pulled from the World of Longplays video on YouTube.

The Auto Pause Notice (On / Off)
Original Japanese screen attached. My translation:

自動ポーズ機能
Automatic Pause Function

ON OFF

自動ポーズをONにすると
30分ごとに 自動的に ポーズがかかります
When the Auto Pause is turned on,
It automatically pauses every 30 minutes.

The Auto Pause Screen.
If I remember correctly, if you turn the auto pause on, you will have to play the game for about 30 minutes, and the 30-minute mark will have to pass while you are in a stage, and you will not see the screen unless you complete the stage, so the screen will never pop up when you are in the middle of a stage, and if you die around the 30-minute mark and are in menus before it pops up, it might not pop up during that 30-minute interval.

Splitting Invaders.
3 screenshots relating to this attached.

Crazy Rainbow Shot.
I myself have never seen the Rainbow Shower, and I don’t know how it occurs. Perhaps you have to kill the final enemy on a stage when it is at the last possible line before it crushes you?…

Engine Trouble.
Screenshot attached.

Congratz Screen
Screenshot attached.

Just that in-game screenshot of the 30 min auto pause. From the Japanese manual it appears like it has a bar at the bottom with some text, but I can’t read that tiny image nor get it to come up in game. If someone can get it, I can translate it and make a new image for it. πŸ˜€

Thanks for these images though Ben!!
I didn’t even think to go look at videos!
Smart idea.

If that’s really how the auto pause comes up… This is gonna be the challenge of the century. πŸ˜•

So, I thought I’d use RedDragon instead since it has some fancy cheat codes!… but it seems like it’s running at 2x speed or something. Which makes it like impossible to play. XD

Does anyone know why this might be happening? o-o

I think I know why… because RedDragon is teh Suck!

Okay, I got the Auto Pause Screen, which I believe translates to about:

健康のためにも目を休めましょう
さもないとこうなります・・・・・・・・
Please rest your eyes for your health.
If you don’t, then……

By the way, I still can’t figure out how to get the Rainbow Shower. I managed to kill a final enemy on the last line before he crushed me, and that didn’t work…

Well, I still haven’t managed to figure out how to get the Rainbow Shower to occur in Space Invaders Virtual Collection, but I did try my best to recreate what appears on page 9 of the instruction booklet, using print screens from Mednafen as well as some manual manipulation in Paint.

OMG BEN!!!!!!
I DID IT!!!

The way you get it apparently is to kill one of the invaders on the first row last. It’s so annoyingly hard that I wanted to die!!

BUT CHECK IT OUT!

Dunno why I got 800pts though.

Thanks for helping with all this! πŸ˜€

Hey Ben, any chance you have a more crisp version of the auto pause? The one you posted is a bit fuzzy. :c
(I have my game just sitting at the Name Registration Screen… doesn’t seem to work here)

The auto pause and the Japanese menu items are the last things that will need screenshots now! I can just fake them in Photoshop no problem, but I hope someone knows how to apply a patch to the rom for them.

Or anyone wanna teach me? :O

I saved this one as a 24-bit Bitmap, so there would be no loss in quality from the original print screen taken from Mednafen. The screen itself has certain effects on it, which give a blurry impression in certain areas.

Very nice! I figured that it would probably require killing a lower row enemy last, and I myself didn’t feel like trying to do so yet, as I figured it would be very hard.

Thanks Ben! You’ve been a big help getting these.
I went ahead and just translated it into something nice and simple.
Again here are the 3 files of the translated menus if some brave programmer wants to patch the ROM. πŸ™‚

For the manual, I just went ahead an Photoshoped these translations into the screenshots.
And for the Auto Pause on and off, I simple used the one from all the English titles.

Please let me know if these files don’t work for what ever reason. I’d happily make edits!

And here is what the finished manual looks like! πŸ™‚

Up next is arguably the best Virtual Boy game… Virtual Lab.
:kappa:

Cool! By the way, according to this page:

https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9669

It seems that if you had killed the leftmost invader on the bottom row last, the bonus would have been 1,000 points.
