Original Post

In a former life I liked to compose digital music as a hobby, then kinda… stopped. There was always something in my head, but I never transferred any of it to the computer because it was never a priority. And that’s the story of why no one knows I have some experience with music. (-:

True to my style, I have another unfinished work to showcase! I have very minimal experience with chiptunes and their associated restrictions, so attached to this post is “baby’s first steps” towards making music for Virtual Boy.

Posted for you enjoyment. Carry on. (-:

Nice one! What software did you use to compose it?

I used FL Studio with a plugin designed to generate NES sounds. I made sure none of my “channels” were generating more than one sound at a time for that authentic flavor.

Thanks, I’ll check out that program. I really did like how authentic this sounded, I could imagine it in a Virtual Boy game, for sure.

FL Studio is designed for fancier audio productions and comes with a professional price tag. If you just want to play around with chiptunes, there are much freer options out there such as FamiTracker you might consider instead.

Haha, awesome, thanks. I saw the $900 price tag for the full featured one and my heart sank. I’ll try Famitracker, thanks!

this was one of my favorite trackers from the ds golden age of homebrew. http://nitrotracker.tobw.net/

it should run in iDeaS if you patch it with the R4 dldi.

Another good one is Musagi by DrPetter of “SFXr” and “Sculptris” fame.

Good job on the song, Guy! Do you plan to recreate it for the VSU, at some point?

Thanks, I’ll give them a shot. Nitro tracker looks really cool, but I’ll have to get a DS and mod it.

Made a birthday gift for a friend. I knew for months I wanted it to be music, but just in the last week or so decided it should be a chiptune.

So behold, my second-ever chiptune! It’s attached to this post.

It’s inspired by the old 8-bit Mega Man games, set to a stage that’s up above the clouds illuminated by the moon. I’ve attached an image as well to get you in the mood. (-:

Just gave it a listen! Love it, man. Love how talented you are 🙂
