So, I bought a Virtual Boy at a flea market yesterday.
So far, it’s working perfectly, and I’d like to keep it that way.
Storing it, though, worries me a little.
What’s the best/safest way to store it to ensure minimal damage to anything inside that could break?
I’ve already been told that it can’t “take a bang,” but is there anything else I should be aware of??

Thanks to all!!!

I store my Virtual Boy in a solid blue container due to its fragile nature

Congrats on a great purchase, flea market eh, go one then how much, make us >$150 folks jealous.
Now they are a little fragile but saying that I live in the UK, mine is from Japan, its 16 years old and i doubt been transported delicately, so the occasional accidental knock shouldn’t cause worry.
Really just keep it safe, away from small sticky handed children and the other usual console killers, and maybe make sure you are the only one to assemble and play it.
I keep mine in a soft bag, was actually for the Wii, it fits well and sits on a shelf, its only me who uses it and i have never had the glitchy display problem (although I’m sure in time i will be treated to it one day). I have pondered making a hard case for it, but only cos it would look good, maybe one day i will and I’ll post the design.
Anything else to be aware of, just don’t go twisting the IPD and sliding the focus back and forth for a laugh, set it up, leave it. Although now i think of it some folks here do say keep the IPD all the way to the left (I think left) when storing.
Enjoy your VB for the beauty it can give, one more seen the (red) light.

I wish I’d known that, I have the IPD and focus set all the right, it’s all blurry and warped if I do different… Is this bad?

Turning the IPD dial all the way to the left (as counterclockwise as you possibly can) is a recommendation for long-term storage, so that unnecessary strain isn’t put on the display cables, which can easily separate from the PCBs inside the Virtual Boy. Thus, if you are not going to use your Virtual Boy for any length of time, simply turn the IPD dial counterclockwise until you can turn it no more, and keep it like that until you use it again. Of course, if this setting isn’t comfortable on your eyes for use, you can adjust it to what is comfortable for you when you use it, but once you are done, turn it completely counterclockwise or all the way to the left, however you want to state it.

As far as I know, you don’t have to worry about the position of the FOCUS slider when storing your Virtual Boy, as this slider has no effect on the position of the display cables. Thus, you can keep the FOCUS slider, which slides left and right and does not turn, in whatever position you want.

Gunpei, you mentioned a container..
Hedgetrimmer, you mentioned a bag..

Do you keep it in a container/bag where it’s a perfect fit, or with some wiggle room?

I store my VB with eye lenses facing up.It has all but corrected the blow it suffered from being dropped (accident of course!)

@nibiru8722: my bag is quite a close fit (so not really any wiggle room), the VB sits with lens facing up (not on purpose its just how it fits in the bag), the stand tucked behind (i do find it pushes on the foam visor a bit so have started to keep the stand out of the bag) the controller fits with the power adapter etc in a front pocket. Not perfect but it works, keeps dust out and i don’t have to use my original box.

@morintari; when you say lenses facing up, you mean the visor part up, or the other way up? Like…the part you look into is facing up?

@Hedgetrimmer
, same question with this one.

Yep thats how mine sits, the bag then zips up over the visor.
I guess a photo would help, but I’m at work can’t do it right now, I will try and remember to snap one tonight.

To anyone who owns a hardcase: Can anyone give me the approx inner dimensions of the official hardcase, length, width and depth (of case and lid), the inner dimensions are what i want to use so my hardcase could in theory use the same foams.

nibiru8722 When I mean lenses facing up, I am talking about the view finder, the clear plastic that you look through to see the screen. With the dark red plastic hard cover what reads VIRTUAL BOY facing down I hope this helps. good luck on your storage and congrats on your find!

Well, so nobody isn’t confused; the container I store it in isn’t the official hard case

I store my Virtual Boy in its box, and then put that into this large solid container (which actually has some other stuff around it (DVD’s, Wii games, etc.) it is packed in snug, I think) and sometimes the VB is out of its box, yet still in the large container (with the VB sitting on top of its box) in which it has LOTS of wiggle room (I never move the container if my VB is not in its box, because it most likely would be damaged)

I forgot what setting I have left my IPD at… (I certainly hope it isn’t to the right!)

I modified a stanley 16″ tool box to store my VB, theres space in there for the stand, controller/battery box and AC adapter tap set. Also in the compartments in the top iv got my games, you can get 6 either side. i had to cut a hole in the top for the stand to pock out. great for storage and transportation.
