Hey everybody,
I just got a Virtual Boy yesterday, got it cheap but with some flaws:

The stand is missing some part(s?) and it seems the battery pack is damaged, since everytime I move the controller, the VB turns off, as if the batteries lose contact.

First, here’s a picture of the stand I got:

here’s the little part that attaches to the console:

sorry about the DSi-quality pictures.

I tried to see what part I am missing to set it up from other VB pictures on the web but couldn’t find any helpful one…
is there a way to set it up with just those parts? do I need to buy the missing part? (most likely I’ll need to buy a new stand I guess).

About the battery pack, basically I have to play with a determined position or else the console will turn off, any tip about this? I also think the best idea would be to buy that AC adapter pack to use with the SNES adapter (it works that way, right?), but so far I couldn’t find one for sale online.

Any help will be appreciated!
I’m glad to finally be able to play with the VB after so many years πŸ˜€ (only played Mario’s Tennis for a few minutes back in 1996, thought it was awesome but there were so many other consoles being released at the time that it just got left behind…)

the stand is missing the “medallion” (the part that has the Nintendo logo on its front) that holds the stand’s “legs” to the clip and it breaks easily (it cracks) because of its weak plastic design

as for the battery pack, does it look like it has any residue of battery acid/corrosion? if not, the compartment could just be worn or maybe its the controller! (its battery/adapter tap connector, the wire, or maybe even the Virtual Boy’s controller connector!)

even if you got an adapter tap + AC Adapter (and yes, the SNES AC Adapter will work) it MIGHT not work if its a controller or controller connector fault πŸ™

Thanks for the clarification!

Any idea if there’s a way to make a home-made “medallion”?

eh I guess I’ll have to spend some extra money on a new controller and a new stand, wasn’t as cheap as it seemed at last πŸ˜›
But at least the VB itself works great.

there is a member of this forum (his username is Hedgetrimmer) who made his own “medallion” for his broken stand but I don’t exactly know how he did that

by the way, did you try taking off the battery pack and then placing it back on the controller? and did you also try unplugging and re-plugging the controller in? (just in case if something is loose for some reason)

First off, try cleaning the battery compartment and battery pack connections with electronics cleaner or alcohol, sounds like an obvious contact issue.

Secondly, yes, reproduction medallions for the stands is a much needed aftermarket product in the VB scene. Hopefully someone will produce them soon.

Thanks, will try cleaning it.

Anyone has a picture of how the medallion looks like?

Here’s the thread about Hedgetrimmer’s homemade medallion:

About the controller: if it resets when you move it, it could also be a broken wire in the cable. Once you eliminate all other possibilities, open the pad and test it with an ohmmeter or continuity tester. Fixing it might be a lot of work, but if you end up replacing it with another pad, you could make it into a USB pad πŸ˜‰

I’d be interested in buying some of those parts. Check your PM inbox.
