Hello again,

As some of you may have read earlier, I had ordered a gamebit so I could open up my VB and fix that annoying cable problem. The website I ordered from advertised their bit as being able to open VB systems, and had been mentioned on several gaming forums. The bit arrived today, and sadly to say that is not the case. The bit doesn’t reach far enough into the holes to grip the screws. Contacting their support has been useless as well. Please don’t buy from these shysters. Now I’m upset, out ten bucks, and I STILL CAN’T OPEN MY FUCKING VIRTUAL BOY.

No need to get upset just get a bic pen(with no lead) that is far enough to reach the screw and then take a lighter and burn the tip of the pen(dont breathe toxic)and then immidiately push the melted tip agains the screw and wait and hold it down for about 10 seconds. Twist the direction the bit needs to go until it comes out.
I hope that helped.

Regular Bic pens are too wide to fit into the hole.

Hmm, is it too thick or is it too short?
When I bought mine, it didn’t fit either. So I used a…well the name eludes me, but basically I ground off some of the metal from the sides so it could fit.
After this, I was just barely to unscrew the deepest screws.

The bit is too thick to fit into the hole. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a dremel or grinder to file the bit down with.

That sucks, especially as they ad that it will do VB.

I had the same with mine, bought here in UK, fortunately i work where i could get it altered.

Do you have an industrial unit near you, somewhere with an engineering shop, its such a quick job that you might manage to get a kind chap to do it for a donut or something. You just need the shoulder diameter grinding down to the bit diameter for about an inch.

Good luck.

I bought a gamebit, grinded the sides and then welded it to a flat-head screwdriver. Essentially making my own screwdriver just for this.

lots of gamebit scams on ebay. Have to look for the sellers that state they ground it down to fit VB.

I read once that some people melted the case of a pen to hold the gamebit and then used that. I bought my gamebits some years ago and I have the same problem: they don’t fit the VB with the screwdriver, but they do fit the carts 😛

I just ordered this game bit from ebay.

I’ll report back and let you guys know if it fits and has the depth needed for the deep screws.

I bought this bit a while ago. It still needs to be filed down on the sides to reach the screws that are really far down. It’s a lot better than the smaller bits. Here is a tip, put the bit in the screwdriver and hand file the sides while the bit is in the screwdriver, it takes a little longer by hand but you will only need to file half the bit. The other half stays fit into the screwdriver and it will fit down there once filed.

I ended up buying that one as well. It succeeded in getting the screws out, although I had to force it in a little bit to remove the two screws near the part that attaches to the VB stand. Didn’t damage the plastic at all, though.

That’s really a bummer to hear, since it was sold specifically as a Virtual Boy game bit. Now I need to buy a hand file as well? Totally Uncool.

I sent this to the seller, didnt know what else to say with the limited text amount.

I just won this game bit tonight, and people are saying they bought the same game bit from YOU and that it doesn’t fit properly in the deep Virtual Boy screw holes without brute force or grinding out/stretching the console plastic to grip the screws. That’s pretty uncool of you to advertise it as a specific game bit deep enough for the Virtual Boy, when you sell this bit that is too wide and deep for the screw holes. Other people sell filed down bits for VB for double the price, but you didn’t mention the strenuous modifications needed to make yours work for the VB without a hand-file or extra physical labor tp kep my VB undamaged. I feel a little bad about wanting to get my money back from you for a completed auction, but the misrepresentation is absolutely “your bad” and not mine.
It’s not the correct or nearly proper item that I truly need as you already know. Sorry again, and please sell bits in the future that actually WORK with the Virtual Boy if you choose to sell them again.

Good! I’m glad you told him. I was a little pissed when it didn’t work properly. That is everything I would have wanted to say to him! THANKS! I left positive feedback for him before I checked to see if the bit fit. I wish I could take it back! Let us know if you get a refund.

We’ll see what happens now. Sellers can’t leave negative feedback anymore, but that doesn’t affect my getting a refund or not.

Overall, I’m going to buy one of the $30 pre-ground down bits. After buying a bit, driving around and buying a handfile, I still am at the mercy of my grinding skills. Too much work for a $15 bit, and overcharched for a $30 one. Rather get the over charged one off the bat than pay $30 for extra parts to make a bad “VirtualJockey” home-failed bit myself! 😛

Who sells $30 pre-ground ones? That $15 one seems way overpriced… at $30, I don’t see why you wouldn’t just buy the whole driver.

From what I’ve read, the complete security bit driver is made of quality metal and properly formed and strong, and doesn’t strip… a lot of those cheap security bits that I’ve bought are made of cheap metal that’s not shaped correctly, the hole is offset from the center, and it strips after a few uses.

You can get the driver several places (there’s a thread somewhere on here)… one of them is here: http://www.nintendorepairhut.com/repairsupplies/nesrepairsupplies.html (Professional 4.5mm Nutsetter Screw Driver). I think there’s some other places that are cheaper, but might be international.
