I love AVGN but seriously? VB worse than Atari Jaguar CD, Atari 5200 and Philips CD-i? No fucking way!

Ahhhh well, I agree that it is not the worst console ever, it just suffered a very bad fate, though it could have been a great console except for its unportableness, though that could have been solved with a redesign.

I think it is one of the best consoles even though it flopped, it was just released too early in more than one way. People were scared that their eyes would get destroyed, total BS if you ask me, it wasn’t portable enough and it wasn’t in color.

Wario Land really showed the system had potential, but the consumer disagreed. Now the 3DS is a succes, with the same drawback if you consider the hurting your eyes part….

I’m really surprised that the Game.com found a better place on the list than the Virtual Boy. As far as commercial success goes, the Virtual Boy actually wins out with more sales of systems and even TWO more commercially released games (oh yeah!!!). And from what I’ve seen on Ebay, sellers have a hard time selling any of the Game.com games these days even for really low prices. I guess I can’t judge it from personal experience, though. Nevertheless, it certainly seems that the Virtual Boy has a much better following than the Game.com.

I’m not surprised, that dude HATES the virtual boy for some reason.

No worries, we know better. The Virtual Boy rocks, and deserves more credit than it got. I mean, it came out when the original gameboy was still nintendo’s champ handheld. I’d WAY rather play my VB than original gameboy.

I’m surprised the Microvision didn’t make the list. I bet the AVGN couldn’t find a working one to review, lol. But except for the Virtual Boy and the R-Zone, I agree with all of the choices, but in a different order.

The Virtual Boy is one of the more well known failures, doesn’t surprise me AVGN would place it ahead of other worse systems. I think he also picked it because it’s one of Nintendo’s only actual failures. He can’t pick any other Nintendo system, no matter how many crummy games they have. It’s hard to seriously rag on other systems not made by Nintendo when 99% of your show is based around Nintendo. Thus, the VB is the perfect whipping boy.

Me personally, the Virtual Boy has only two significant flaws. 1) The poorly designed display cables. 2) The severe lack of games. Everything else about the VB is fine. Yes, even the red and black displays.

Still, I consider the Jaguar CD, Game.com, R-Zone and CD-i all worse than the VB.

Who said the 5200 was a bad system? The only bad part is the controller, the games are great, which is what matters.

That does seem like a harsh assessment. I feel that 4/5 people who talk so definitively about how much the VB sucks have never even played one. It’s just like the rumors at school that people start to haze the new or different student…everyone is likely to believe or repeat them because it’s easier than being unbiased until you “see for yourself”.

Not long ago I saw some person making comments on a similar (but older) “worst console” list. Regarding the then-upcoming 3DS, they said something about how people would go blind from it and ‘did we not learn our lesson from the Virtual Boy?’. That same person later had posted that they were mad because the XL 3DS was unavailable in his town. Personally, I think most VB haters just want to make an obscure reference to seem smarter, and sadly you guys are right about the VB being an easy target..

Still, everyone can have their opinion and maybe they just really don’t like it 🙂

i’ve found that people who complain usually have no understanding of what makes a great game.

for me the enjoyment comes from being able to have fun. i can pump 10 bucks into an original asteroids machine and have a blast. what i love about asteroids are the complex controls that take time to master, the simplicity of play, and the overall challenge. i see the game for more than just a few lines and singular sound. i feel that those who rate the VB poorly can’t understand the fun that is found in simplicity. The most basic of games (pong) can be amazingly fun if you simply have the right mind set. i would never talk down about a video game system, regardless of how much of a failure it was. in fact, the more obscure it is, makes me want to experience its games that much more. both complex and simple games can entertain, i’m sad for those who aren’t capable of experiencing both.

i know a lot of people who talk down about the vb, and every one of them has never experienced it. the complaints i hear are the same things i’ve read a 100 times myself. i get upset when people regurgitate what they have read and make it their own opinion. reading is not experiencing. i’ve found the vb to be incredibly fun, with great pick-up-and-play games. i’ve never had an issue dialing it in and gaming on it for hours, no back pains, eye strain, etc. i may not want to go back and experience its library as often as my NES or Genesis, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have some really fun games.

We acept virtualboy is was a bad console but not in 2 place!

I knew it would be on the top 10 but 2nd, I disagree.

Good point, I forgot to mention that whole slew of physical complaints people seem to have with it. It’s like when you tell a doctor that it hurts to do something, and he replies “then don’t do it!”. In this case, it means “don’t put the VB and stand on a low table and bend your spine funny for hours trying to play”. And the whole eye strain rumor, my eyes squint a little bit when I stop playing but the same way they do when leaving a dark movie theater and going into bright sunlight. VB eye strain can’t be any worse than when people play XBOX 360 on a 48″ screen in a dark room for hours on end…

I think it may have come from people not realizing that you have to adjust the 3D. The adjustment screen looks like a startup screen.
