Hello everyone,

I know i haven’t checked in for a while,and am a noob at anything technical,But…..

I have a problem with my VB.

I recently purchased a very cheap vb,which was a gamble on my part, because it was sold as is. When i received it,i tested it and it worked like a charm. I couldn’t be more happy! Fast forward a couple of months and i hadn’t used it in that time, I thought: lets try out my newly purchased headphones for it. To my shock it started to make a tremor like sound every few seconds when i turned it on,and after 4 times it made the sound,it seemded to shut down/power of. I have looked at a few forum posts and Googled the problem, but was not able to find any answers to what it might be. I do see the lenses/shutters move but there is no picture/startup screen. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Are you running on batteries, or AC adapter? It sounds like you might need to replace your batteries, or maybe have a bad power supply.

I have tried 2 different battery packs and ac adapters and new batteries
Same result.
I have also opened te VB and took a peek inside.
It looks like both mirrors/shutters hit the side of the led casing when they start to tremble/shutter.

Although i cant really be sure about that because it is a bit difficult to see it.

I’m not sure what you mean by “LED casing”… but if the mirrors aren’t moving properly, the displays won’t turn on.

Can you take a pic of what piece you’re talking about? If you mean the red eye pieces… you can easily pull them out and try again. I’m not sure how the mirrors would be hitting anything though, unless it somehow became horribly unmounted from the rest of the system.

I think the mirrors are hitting against the casing where the video images are projected from.

I have found a video on youtube from a VB owner who has the same problem as me and doesn’t know how to fix it either:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhtWbpVx2PQ

The responses he has to the video doesn’t seem clear or helpfull to me.

I shal try to take a few pictures and post them, but perhaps the video is helpfull enough.

Ah… yeah, I’d guess the optos aren’t working on that one (either failing, or dirty). It looks like it’s starting the mirrors fine, but not getting any feedback, so it goes too far and out of control.

I still haven’t seen a mirror control problem myself, but it sounds like they’re becoming more common (other people have been mentioning seeing one display fluctuating in size, which would be the mirror going faster and slower). Without actually seeing it, I can’t say for sure what it is… but it really sounds like the optos aren’t working correctly.

Thanks for the response.
I’m going to try to tinker a bit with the VB and maybe i can figure out if it is possible to fix or find out what might cause the mirrors to act like a vibrator gone bad ; )

I’ll try to post any progress (or faillure) in the near future.

I haven’t got any use for it as it is right now,i might as well try something with it,and maybe i get to learn something technical for a change.

I’d start by cleaning the opto. The first thing I’d try is just blowing it out with air… if that doesn’t work, try a small cloth or qtip with alcohol or something (just be careful not to damage the “flag”, which moves back and forth between the opto). You can see some pics, comments, etc. that I posted about a similar issue here: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5152&post_id=24681#forumpost24681 .
