Original Post

Hi everybody ! This is my first post on this forum, and I beg you to excuse me for any spelling mistakes that I’ll do as I’m French.

Yesterday I received a Virtual Boy in a very good condition! However, there is a problem: it’s impossible to mute the VB! I can only increase or decrease the volume by turning the volume control wheel, but not mute the console.

Do you think the problem is the volume control wheel or elsewhere (like capacitors) ?

Thank you for yours answers!

I can’t remember if my VB goes down to zero loudness, and it’s not set up for me to try.

If you want it to be silent, you could try plugging something into the headphone socket?

Yes I can plug headphones, but I would compare with others Virtual Boy users to know if my device has a problem (I hope not: /)

EDIT :Thanks to thunderstruck, I confirm that my VB has a problem … If someone has an idea where this comes down, let me know!

I have seen/heard this myself as well in a few VB’s. I switched out the sound board and the problem moved alongside the sound board. So it is either a problem in the board or a badly calibrated potmeter and I am inclined to believe it is the latter (but have no real proof that is the case).

Mine doesn’t mute either. I always thought it was just another quirk like the inevitably glitchy displays and the fragile stand, caused by bad design and/or manufacturing.

So I ‘m not the only one to have this problem on my VB … Curious that this problem is not listed, in addition to the common displays problem…

In your opinion, what should we do to correct this? Change the potentiometer ? I disassembled the console, and it is a double 10 ko potentiometer (stereo 5 pins, + 2 grounded ), 14 mm diameter and 3 mm thick.
