Lol, I did the easy part. Thanks for the great deal on a like-new cart. And for encouraging me to actually give Waterworld a chance!

I can’t explain that behavior, but… I know a guy who is looking to add Waterworld to his collection. 😀

If you still want to sell, let me know. If you’d rather not, no biggie.

Yes! If Nintendo did some sort of Switch VR, putting VB games on that would be a much better fit than on 3DS. I’d rather play these games in an immersive VR environment (like a real VB) than on a tiny 3DS screen. The immersive 3D is a huge part of the games.

Imagine playing Galactic Pinball on a VB (or Switch headset) vs. playing it on, say, a 2DS. If you want a 2-D monochrome pinball game, there are lots of Game Boy pinball games that are more fun than Galactic Pinball. It’s the immersive 3D that makes the experience.

Personally I think the “classic” consoles are a genius move that cashes in on the generation that was raised on Nintendo, and now finally has the money to spend on it. It’s a way to get a chunk of the “retro gaming” aftermarket pie. Releasing a VB Classic would likely be profitable, especially now that there are lots of people with both the NES and SNES classic, who would “need” to get the VB one, even if they were never very big on VB in the first place.

But it’s looking like the new president of Nintendo wants to focus more on mobile gaming, setting his sights on the wallets of younger gamers. So I give it a 0% chance of happening. We’ll have to create it ourselves.

I did some math, if we get enough people to in on a group buy of 50, if everyone wants 10, we could end up getting them for between $1.50-$1.60 a piece, including shipping to everyone.

If we get enough for a group buy of 100, we could bring it down to between $1.10-$1.20 a piece, shipped. Not bad!

V-Tetris is suuuper cheap, even brand new in box. And it’s great fun.

3-D Tetris is interesting, I like the puzzle mode more than the endless mode. Once you finish all the puzzles, the endless mode isn’t all that fun.

But just like every console, there are games that didn’t do well, so not very many copies got printed. Now, decades later, some of the most expensive games are some of the least enjoyable. It’s a paradox.

Of course it’s not the case for every rare game on every console. But Waterworld on VB? Yes.

Oh snap. This would be great. What will I do with my Flashboy+ after this is finished? Will anyone want one anymore?

The common reply is going to be that the “oven” fix is not always successful, and the problem can recur over time, and that you need to pay someone to solder the ribbon cable for a permanent fix. Then you’ll get people advertising that they’ll do it for you.

Really weird that it works ok for some games though…

I collect a lot for the game boy and these are the best of the best in my opinion. I’d at least recommend checking them out on youtube. Not in any particular order:

Trip World
Chalvo 55
The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls
Wendy: Every Witch Way (Game Boy Color)
Metal Masters
Pokemon (all of them including TCG and pinball)
Banishing Racer
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Game Boy Adventure
Kid Dracula
Spud’s Adventure
WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color)
Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise
Donkey Kong (The 1994 Original GB Game)
Gargoyle’s Quest
Tiny Toon Adventures

A lot of these aren’t very well known. They’re all top notch though.

Do you have any pointers for Metal Masters?? All I can find online is “this game is bad and too hard and impossible.” I can get through a couple of rounds, but it feels like I’m missing some important game mechanic or something.

I’m willing to do this repair in exchange for Virtual Boy games and accessories. If you have any of the following laying around:

VB controllers (working or not)
VB games (working or not)
VB game dust covers
VB eye-shades
VB stands
VB AC adapters
VB battery packs
Anything VB!
I would also gladly trade for Game Boy games and hardware.

I could do it for money, but I’m just going to spend it on this stuff anyways. So just toss this stuff in when you mail your VB or ribbons! Send me a PM and we’ll work something out. I’m located in the US.

That’s nice of you vuefinder. Thanks for the offer, I’ve got more controllers than I need right now, so I’m glad it’s going to retronintendonerd.

Merry Christmas to all you who observe it!

That’s unfortunate, but I bet if you glue the two pieces back together, and solder all the traces, it could work again (and be permanently innoculated against ever needing the oven fix!) Without soldering it, hot glue will definitely not help.

I’d be willing to try soldering it if you don’t want to try it yourself. I’ve soldered a few VB units with great success. Let me know if you want to work something out.

Obligatory “got mine” post. It works great and saves great!

Thanks a ton!

You have 64 carts for Jaguar? Seems wrong to have any other number. 🙂

Wikipedia says there are a total of 67 carts, plus 15 CD games. That might be off, since there’s an AtariAge forum that says there’s a total of 83 games, which is one more than 67+15. Shrug. Either way, that’s a phenomenal CIB Jaguar collection.

And VB collection too!

Oh neat, I’ve been meaning to pick that one up. I assume you already found someone, so let me know if you find another one within the next 11 months 🙂 I’ll pay for it.

Of course, there are hundreds of JPN GB games I want, but this is a significant one.

Yeah dude, Game Boy is my jam. I’ve played close to all of the ~500 (black and white) USA games, and I’m starting to look into imports now as well. Game Boy and Virtual Boy feel like close cousins when it comes to the style of games available.

Great suggestions so far, I haven’t discovered any hidden masterpieces or anything, but it partly depends on what kind of game you like. There are SO MANY crappy sidescrollers. And lots of puzzle games, but I love puzzle games, and I never understood why people complained about having too much of a genre that is perfectly suited to the Game Boy.

But don’t get me started! I’ll add a couple must-plays:
– Super RC Pro-Am
– All 5 Kirby games
– Zelda: Link’s Awakening
– Super Mario Land 2
– Tetris (unless you already have V-Tetris for VB :D)
– BurgerTime Deluxe
– Dr. Mario
– Elevator Action
– Game & Watch Gallery
– Boomer’s Adventure in ASMIK World
– Kid Dracula
– Metroid II
– Revenge of the Gator
– Tetris Attack
– Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
– Yoshi

I’m able to solder them if you don’t find anyone else.

This is great info, thanks all!

I’ve been distracted with other things, playing off and on, not doing a very good load test on these batteries. but I’d better keep an eye on the voltage if it’s going to dip that low. Maybe I’ll slap on one of those voltage indicator lights or something to keep me aware of the voltage without tampering with the controller itself. I don’t want to tamper with the controller, I just want to play VB off 18650’s, as simply as possible. Hopefully I’ll have time this weekend to make some incremental improvements.

Welcome! I believe there are folks around these parts who have fixed those ribbon cables many times and may be able to help you. If not, it’s a fix I’ve done myself on my personal VB, so I could help as well.

I thought they were rated at 3.7 each for 7.4 total. I’ll definitely measure the voltage of my “battery” when it stops powering the VB, and I’ll try to track how long it lasted. It’s been humming along great for about an hour of playtime so far. Whatever my results are, new 18650’s would perform better than these salvaged ones.

It would be neat to install some sort of charge board with a micro USB port on it, so I could either swap the batteries out, or just plug it right into my phone charger.
