Original Post

I decided to make my entry this year a remake of one of my most favourite old-school games from the Atari ST/Amiga: Hunter.

It’s a third person 3D action adventure in a large open world made by filled polygons.

You can ride dozens of different vehicles and blow lots of stuff up.

In this first version you can walk, swim, ride cars and boats and use bombs to blow up all buildings. If you like it enough ( πŸ˜‰ ) I promise to make the complete game by new years.

Tried this with red dragon emulator and it starts to blink half the time like the yeti3D demo did

Ok so even if it blinked 80% of the time is was playable and I really like it, well what it can become
One day I will try it on the hardware when I fix my vb but for now its ok

I checked out the hunter amiga game and I understand its all about going around and doing missions by killing enemies and so on

Maybe it was just me but the bombs would not destroy the houses and even when I crash with the vehicles it would not explode but maybe thats how the game is supposed to be or maybe I need to find a upgrade to the bombs or something

Its ironic if you ever finish this game and make it like hunter on amiga (even if you can not enter the buildings) it might become top 5 vb games

so for me atleast I like it and for the rest of you, dont think I just go around complaining because I really do give praise when deserved

Its not a game I would ever pay more then 20 euro for but that might be like I said because I only tried it on emulators and the blinking is kinda annoying

I can’t understand why you keep insisting on using older emus like Red Dragon when we have Mednafen. There is no blinking in Mednafen.

(And it takes 2 bombs to destroy the houses πŸ˜‰ )

Tough houses, those are! πŸ™‚

Otherwise… wow. This is going to be just awesome.

I just tried this out… very cool!

This is very cool indeed! I’m not sure if I like the “game” (I guess it would help to have played the original) as there is no instruction or story at all to tell me what I’m supposed to do or why. Also, why does the car “auto drive”?

I love the “little touches” like the moon and its rippling reflection in the water; and the map, although it doesn’t actually indicate your character or “objectives” (unless I’m reading it wrong :-P).

The only major “failure” IMO is the HUD that’s “embedded” in the world. You should either have it be the “closest” thing (which would limit how much space it has) or restrict the polygons so they don’t “break the window” by coming closer than the screen plane. I think the latter would be best, since it would improve their appearance as well.

Finally, the geek in me has to say: I’m just really going to have fun looking through the source-code πŸ˜‰

To be honest I have tried but never understood how to open mednafen
I get the zip file, extract it and try to open program but no luck
I look on google and they are all like use some command line, where do I type that, start–>run?

What command line?

/me facepalms

Sorry akumie… I guess when you hang around geeks all day you assume everyone knows how to use the command line. What version of Windows are you using? If you’re on XP, you should be able to find “Command Prompt” under Accesories in the start menu. On Vista or 7, I’ll bet you can search for it in that little box. (My hours logged on Vista and 7 are surprisingly below average, being a Linux user.) Once that’s open, you can use the command “dir” to list files in the current directory and “cd” to change directories. “cd ..” will take you up a level. I haven’t used the Windows version of mednafen, but you probably cd to the directory that mednafen.exe is in, and then type “mednafen.exe romname.vb” assuming that the rom is in the same directory as the exe. Or you could wimp out and find some kind of frontend…

Yeah, I thought that was really cool as well, except I wondered if the full moon rises and sets… where’s the sun?

DogP

Thanks guys!

To be honest I have tried but never understood how to open mednafen

Actually, the simplest way is to just drag and drop the rom onto mednafen.exe…

There is no instruction or story at all to tell me what I’m supposed to do or why.

That’s because there isn’t really any objective in the game yet… Just explore and wreak havoc!

Also, why does the car “auto drive”?

Because it does so in the original πŸ˜€

and the map, although it doesn’t actually indicate your character

Actually it does (but it’s just one pixel, that doesn’t blink) It’s more visible when you’re on the boat at sea.

The only major “failure” IMO is the HUD that’s “embedded” in the world.

That’s also on my todo list πŸ™‚

I wondered if the full moon rises and sets… where’s the sun?

Heh, I am going to make full day/night cycles, but time was running short and I had to push it out before the deadline πŸ˜›

Just tried this on my FlashBoy Plus, and I really, really like it. The 3d effect works rather well!
~Great potential~ πŸ™‚

what Accesories?
I open start manu but find no Accesories, just kontrollpanel, run…

I did put all the roms in the same file as mednafen and then drag the rom to the mednafen program icon but it still would not start

Can someone please make deatailed tutorial exactly where to add the command line, what command lines need to be used where and the likes

Start menu, then Programs (or All Programs), then Accessories and Command Prompt.

I am sorry but I found it then on mednafen homepage it game some comman codes but -loadcd x wont work

Please can you make a detailed turorial and send it to me

You should only need to type

C:\program\mednafen\mednafen.exe C:\vbroms\hunter.vb

Or whatever path you have to the exe and the rom.
If that doesn’t work, Mednafen doesn’t like your pc for some reason…

I try but it just give “its not an interner or external commando”

I open the commando program and it says

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>

So I type

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>mina dokument\mednafen\mednafen.exe

Nothing happens so I try

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>mina dokument\vbroms\hunter.vb

Nothing happens so I try

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>mina dokument\mednafen\mednafen.exe c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>mina dokument\vbroms\hunter.vb

Nothing happens

It’s because of the space in mina dokument… try:

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>”mina dokument\mednafen\mednafen.exe” “mina dokument\vbroms\hunter.vb”

Juste Drag and drop the “hunter.vb” file on the “mednafen.exe” file in your explorer Akumie :]

I think it’s time for me to buy a Flashboy + :] Impressive work DanB ! I want to try that on the real hardware asap

Hmm… whats the object of the game? And is the even VB capable of smooth 3D, I mean 3D Tetris was slow, and that was an official game.

Anyway, amazing to have this 3D world in a VB game. Keep working on it!

c:\documents and settings\nihongo1>”mina dokument\mednafen\mednafen.exe” “mina dokument\vbroms\hunter.vb”

will not work and dragging roms wont work, oh well jusy have to wait and play on hardware after all its only yeti3d and hunter that needs that specific emulator to work 100%

But you did download the latest 0.9 development version and not the 0.8 version which did not support VB, right?
