I’ve been playing around with the idea of a reprogrammable cart label using ePaper. The source images need some work but you can see the idea here. When power is removed the image is still retained. You can do red and black, or even mix them. There are also ways to play with the refresh to get grey levels in between the normal on and off.

The thing holding me back from integrating this into a reprogrammable cart is the case. Which is a bit sad since it’s totally doable but a custom case is super expensive to have made.

This is such a cool idea for a reprogrammable cart

Damn man, that is very creative and looks really cool. Too bad about the case though.

Still working the case thing to see if this may be possible. I’d give it about a 25% chance at this point.

That’s pretty clever, and really neat. 3D printing the carts wouldn’t look as good as the original, but they worked out for the newer iterations of the flashboy+ and might be a solid cheaper alternative to custom art cases, plus giving many options of color-types, if the others cases don’t work out.

This is really cool, and reminds me a lot of the Dreamcast VMUs.

Would there be any protection for the screen, or is it sturdy enough to be gripped when handling the cart?

How, exactly, would this work in practice? I can see utility for this with single-game flash carts, where it gets updated when you flash a new game via PC, so you can easily identify which game is currently on it.

It doesn’t really make sense to me for something like the MultiBoy, where you’re most likely to be leaving it in your VB all the time. Maybe if the MultiBoy had its own battery, and you changed games by pulling the cart out, hitting one or two buttons to cycle games (maybe pressing another to program it, if that’s necessary), then sticking it back in to play that game; but that sounds like it’s more hassle and expense than it’s worth.

Intention is that it would be for a single-game flash cart. Everything else is still TBD.

This is really cool! Maybe the game could modify what the label looks like when you, say, defeat a boss, or get a record, etc.

Very cool concept!
