Original Post

Hey everyone, I have been working on a custom N64 recently and felt like sharing. I am just about done with this one. All I am needing now is a good controller to use for a donor for my wood faceplate. I would love to see some other examples of consoles or even accessories that you guys have customized and made your own. So post em up!

Current Mods:

-Region Mod to inner cart slot
-Custom Wood /Silver Paint Job with many clear coats
-Color changing LED and back-lit N64 Logo (9 colors I believe in all)
-A couple clear Atomic N64 parts added
-Black cart slot flaps from Atomic console
-Official Nintendo Ram Expansion
-Custom Wood/Silver Controller (almost done)

*No overclocking here because I wanted to maintain factory functionality.

Wow, looks pretty snazzy, I love the wood!

Some serious faux-finishing talent on display, there! I love the contrast with the silver, too.

The use of the smoked/clear cover on the expansion pak slot is genius! I’m thinking it would be cool to have a “breathing” (slow sine-wave fade in/out) red LED backlight inside. Something like an “engine core” effect from a sci-fi spacecraft.

I think the logo/power light should just be green, though. The rainbow effect doesn’t go that well with the wood theme, IMO.

Thanks much for the positive words! I would have to agree with you on the back-lit logo. I was actually gonna go with just a lime greenish color but got a bit carried away haha.

Very cool. Makes me want to do something like that to my Jaguar. But I think I might break it!

I know of at least two members here who have customized their Virtual Boy systems. Here are links to their creations, in case you haven’t seen them already:

Pure awesome, thanks for the links! Those are both very different and very cool examples. Love seeing the different ideas people have. Especially with a console that is already so unique.

I knew there was another one I was forgetting about:

Also, a few of us here remember a white Virtual Boy that popped up on Ebay once. The paint job was completely horrible, though. :-/

Hahaha, I remember that one, it was the one that just happened to be silver right? It’s probably still on ebay.

Actually, if there was one where the seller said that it just happened to be silver, then that might be yet another one, because I don’t remember the seller of the white Virtual Boy calling it a silver color. It was definitely a very white color, and it had a lot of spots on it where the paint drips were simply left there and had hardened. I think the white one actually sold rather quickly, though.

I remember the silver one as well. He didn’t specifically say that he painted it silver. He just said he is selling his very rare silver Virtual Boy.

Yeah that sounds like another one then. What’s up with people giving these things bad paint jobs and putting them on ebay?

That’s the one!

Oh man, I cant stand it. Makes me cringe when I see the prices they are asking for the crappy rattle can jobs. Not saying you cant do a nice one with a spray can, but it is definitely rare. What really gets me is when they throw some homemade stickers on it and clear coat over it. lol. I really wanna do a custom virtual boy, but I am really pleased with the way they already look. If anything I wouldn’t mind messing with the viewing lens(by making new ones) or changing LED color (which looks like a total pain in the arse).

I love customs consoles!
That N64 looks incredible, as good as Zoki’s work even!

Are you familiar with Rose Colored Gaming? I am a huge fan:

I love the products from Rose Colored Gaming. Would definitely like one of those SNES/SFC gbas. So clean and well executed.

They are very nice, I have a real fondness for them – I just there were more available – hopefully Nintendo see this and release a Super Famicom version of the new 3DS (I think this is coming later this year).

Your mods look on just as good a quality as Wiggy’s though, hats off on that N64 mod!! do you take commissions?

That really depends on the request itself. I honestly had not thought about it, but it could be fun. Recently started a new job so that is really absorbing all my free time at the moment sadly. I think my next project is gonna be to make a bunch of the Virtual boy eye shades and get them to people looking for replacements on here. That way I can get some solid reviews of my product to put up on my blog and so on. Was also thinking about just scanning in the flat pattern I created to make mine, and then making a full tutorial on how to make them. That way everybody can make their own if they so chose. No need to keep such info to myself. Im never gonna get rich making VB eyeshades lol, and I would rather the information be out there for everyone to have.

*giggles* My Virtual Girl was actually a rattle can job by hand believe it or not. I took several days sanding, coating, drying, evening out, etc. (Daughter of a former custom car painter). I would have loved to change the lens color and LEDS like you but like you said, seems damn near impossible. Love the work on your consoles!
