Original Post

Using 3ds Max to create a 3D model of the Virtual Boy.
I was looking for one the other day but could not find one.
I read a post here that some people were interested in one, so I decided to start my own.

currently an hour and a half into creating the model.
Only problem is I do not have an eye shade or a stand.

Anyone have a side view and front view of the eye shade and the stand?

I will make the 3D model downloadable and free.

Quick mock up virtual boy model.
Need Pictures of eye shade and stand to complete the model correctly.

Post them here if you can.

I have got some parts 3D modelled, I use Solidworks so mine is dimensionally accurate, copy of the stand as a 3D pdf enclosed.
I have not done the head unit or visor, but hopefully this will help you out.

Awesome! This helps a lot. It wont look as good in 3ds max considering I am free styling it and not doing exact measurements but this PDF render helps a lot for the stand.

Thanks.

No problem, I’m pleased you like it. You do know its a 3D viewable pdf, not just a render, you can rotate, pan, zoom, hide parts, make them transparent etc.
I see yours is more stylized, I’m a 3D draughtsman so being dimensionally accurate is the thing I try and achieve, but so long as you keep that style its will look good once you have it finished.

stand portion is looking much better now that I have a suitable reference. Still a long way to go on this.

Need a verdict on this. Constructive criticism welcome. Ended up free styling the visor considering all I have to go off of are crappy google images.

Created in 3ds max 2009

File formats:
*.FBX
*.3ds
*.max

Feel free to use it or modify it.

Not bad at all, a stylized version sure, but it works, looks like a VB.
If anything you could have made it a little more angular with smaller filleted edges, but considering you don’t have a unit in front of you to go on its pretty good.

My recommendation, buy a VB, play it, then if you find you still have free time, tweak your model a little.

Will you provide your model in .Obj format it seems so much cleaner than .3ds is this model not to scale? it’s a fine model indeed though.Kudos GeekNFreak

I don’t know if you still need them, but I figured I’d post them here in case you do. Let me know if you need any other angles.

*.OBJ version, Should work with most modern software.

Nice model !

Do you have one with just the head-unit (without the stand) ?

Very nice. I was able to use the OBJ file to test a process I’ve been working on to import models into homebrew roms. The VB isn’t quite up to the task of moving an object around with such a high polygon count. I was able to display the model in a test rom though… just at a frame rate of about 1 every 10 seconds. Anyway great job, it was nice to have a model done by someone who looks like they know what they are doing.

what format would you like just the head unit in? I can easily delete the stand if you would like.

.obj or .stl will be fine – thanks

If you can also do an stl I’d like to take a look at what you have achieved, for some reason Solidworks doesn’t import obj files, I guess because they are just polygon faces and no solids, but it will import stl.

Visor mount 3D model done.
Render below, you can also take a look at it with a 3D pdf and for the 3D modelling & printing folks an STL.
I’m pretty sure its dimensionally accurate but I’ve not double checked it.

That is seriously nice Hedge=D any luck on getting that file in obj?

Thanks fella.
Solidworks doesn’t export in obj, but I just remembered i have a copy of meshlab installed on this pc, so I imported the stl into meshlab and exported as an obj, so I hope it turns out ok.
