Donor carts is definitely not going to cut it for a multi cart hardware build.

I’m about a month behind at the moment. My board house was shutdown for a month as well. They said they’re back up and running but in reality it looks like they’re still not up to full production as I’m waiting on a PCB (different project) from them now and its late.

A bit of feature creep and design changes have also delayed. I’ve also been sick more times in this last 6 months than I think the rest of my life combined. Kid in daycare. :-S.

Its looking like I’ll have the first smaller production run (~25 units) around the first week of April. I’ll develop the firmware on those and make sure everything is solid, then I’ll put in the larger order. There’s a portion of these units that is built by hand so units will ship out based on how orders were received.

Below is an x-ray view of the bottom cover PCB board. This turned out to be probably more complicated than the actual memory and MCU main board. Big circles at the bottom are the embedded capacitive touch sensors. The actual outside will only have the blue graphics and no vias will be visible from the outside.

Oh, and the VB characters eyes on back light up through the PCB when there’s USB traffic. LOL.

Playing around with the printer between HyperFlash32 work. I call it the VENOM edition. hahaha. It will have a white on black LCD display as well. 3D printed carbon fiber. Surface finish is quite nice and its super strong.

I used a local office max tonprint off 3 sheets at about $1/ea for the box. I used a gloss white, legal sized 100 lbs card stock. As others stated, the standard file size resulted in a box that is slightly larger than standard. I figured this out when I tried to put it into a box protector 😅

Surprised Office Max let you do that. Usually they’ll refuse due to the Nintendo logo.

Still moving forward. I’ll start trickling them out end of March. I’m a little behind at the moment. My board house is also shut down right now due to all the corona virus stuff.

I plan to do a small run of them first to make sure all the kinks are ironed out. Probably 25 or so. If everything goes well there then I’ll then follow up with a large batch to ship the rest. More updates to follow.

I think the issue with pin price is really a volume problem. I run up against this in almost every VB project. Or any small project for that matter. The volumes are just too low to make things cheap enough.

That leads to finding parts where you could then steal the pins, like in my link cable design. But then you have labor to remove the pins in the first place. The labor makes it about the same cost as just buying the pins in lower volumes.

If I wasn’t doing all the labor myself, none of it would be cost effective. This is where most VB projects end up. Then you make the passion or hobby argument to justify moving forward.

These are all my own opinions and views obviously but I’d be curious what other people think.

Love it! Came out really clean. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

The first and third pictures are my 16Mbit carts. They won’t hold HF. The middle 32Mbit one is my new cart and it will hold HF. So will my discontinued 128/256 carts.

Nice job on the carts! Glad it all worked out.
Impressive on the programmer as well.

I retried a 3D carbon fiber case. It came out very clean. The guy who did my original print oriented the part badly so the original did not look good. I need to adjust the screw depth as it popped out a bit on the top cover when I tightened down the screws. This would definitely be usable as a case. $6 to print.

Still the plan. Small chance it may not work very well and need to be scrapped, but risk is low. There will still be a lot more functionality exposed through a computer GUI. The on-cart programming will be simple as possible. Like my “auto” command on my current programmer.

My new 32Mbit PCB. I’ll be busy tonight. 🙂
