Updated my post on my page with a summary of whats happened with molded cases and where I’m at now. Still editing but an early version is up. Most of the information is in this thread but just spread out over multiple posts. Hoping the high flow ABS I have coming will work out.

Email me. Programmers fall into 2 batches and the code is not interchangeable. Well, 3 now with OLED versions. I’ll recompile using your serial number and send you the hex file for updating.

The GSN serial number can actually be overwritten via another command in the EEPROM. However, there’s a serial number that prints at boot up that is hard coded and cannot be overwritten. Probably better to use that one.

VB Cart Programmer Quick Start Guide

I just got a sample part of the FormLabs Tough 2000. Not bad. This could probably be used to make connectors. It deforms a bit before cracking, which is good. It can also take a hit with a hammer without cracking. A connector would have thinner walls and so will take less impact but it would probably work.

If work buys some for testing, I’ll sneak in some test prints.

You may need to adjust the models for SLA as well. You may know this but with 3D printing you usually start off with a design that should work, and then tweak it to work better with your 3D printer. So most of my parts have been tweaked to work well with the Markforged Onyx. The models may need tweaking for printing in other materials. You can use Tinkercad to make simple changes. I actually build all my models in Tinkercad from basic shapes.

Which SLA machine? FormLabs just announced Tough 2000, which is their closest resin to ABS so far and they claim it’s great for connectors.

I ended up getting parts for two more if anyone is interested.

One will have the white on black OLED screen. The second will need to have a red on black LCD screen.

Posting here as well since not everyone is on Discord. I’ve been pushing hard the last few weeks. Boards are out for quote now for fab and assembly. I’ll be most likely switching the case colors to black. This will give it a black with white silkscreen look. Should look nice.

The main board is pretty dense for a VB cart. Definitely couldn’t have done this without a split PCB design integrated into the case. Exciting stuff.

It’s a mix of machine, material, and mold. Then there’s the issue that even if the material exists, you may not be able to buy it because they only sell in volume.

I was attempting to get this working with a mold on a $3k injection molding machine. It’s a larger than normal desktop machine but looks like it may not pan out. That means going back to a real injection mold company, which raises prices significantly. An at home solution would have allowed me to do different colors and create them only when needed.

There’s one more material coming from Singapore that may work out. But after testing so many materials, I’m not too confident. But who knows, I might get lucky on the last try. Wouldn’t be the first time.

DIY. I’ve paid for the molds and all the material testing. I’ll need to ice it soon if something doesn’t start working better.

Really like the customization options. Very unique.

TPO material cases, although there are still issues. These molded cases are still being worked in the background but its been painful. Getting a mold made was the easy part, to be honest.

Still requires a 5V source. I have some ideas but they won’t come until after all the first batch of units ship. For example, wouldn’t be too difficult to add a plug-in module with a battery inside. Something that plugs into the USB port and provides power. Not sure it really buys you anything though other than its a “neat to have”.

The screen will be white on black OLED, not LCD. All parts in route.
