It is indeed the same process as replacing a GB, SNES or any other cartridge save battery.
I do not know the exact number of the battery, but it is a different one than the GB. Just unscrew your cartridge and you’ll know 😉
I first got to know about the Virtual Boy when I was 12 years old reading bout it in a magazine.
I couldn’t believe that it would be released as 3D was such an “out there” technology at that time! So I was super hyped until I couldn’t find any articles about it for more than a year and got super disappointed (the horror of the time that internet wasn’t our friend yet 😉 )!
Until I discovered the Virtual Boy a few years ago and decided to import one to the Netherlands and ever since I got one to work I am in love with the console.
Then came the glitchy display problem which I dared to try and (eventually succeed) to permanently fix with the soldering method, which only made me love the console even more!
I now have two working Virtual Boys with a few games, original, homebrew and a Flashboy which really gives me the opportunity to play every game that is available for the masses (hoping for some old proto’s to still surface).
Repairing these things is something cool as well, knowing you make such a rare piece of gaming history to work as it should for many years to come. That really makes it the most special console for me.
That is for sure the the blueprint of Space Squash, still one of my favorites for the Virtual Boy! And thanks to a few members here now easily played in English!
Just a confirmation on my repairing status, I do repair VB’s again! I have done quite a few for PVB members lately. Just shoot me a PM if you want me to do yours!
Thanks for the update on this! Very glad to hear that PVB is here to stay. This site helped me love the VB for what it is, repair my own VB and after that taken care of repairs of many PVB members their VB displays!
Thanks for your very informative reply, though (judging from your information) I am afraid the problems with these boards are beyond my skill set. I have measured the voltage regulators on both boards, just to be sure, and it came back completely normal. There are no apparent shorts in the display connectors, sockets or anywhere else.
With the one that freezes, it only gets through to the IPD setting screen at a cold boot, when it has been booted it stops at the warning screen.
Happy New Year all! Lets hope for a good VB year which will hopefully include a VB virtual console for the 3DS, one of my long standing wishes. Will certainly continue playing the real thing, but this would really make playing VB games on the road easier 😉
They will both follow again, this is just a delay of the problem and if you do the oven trick too many times you can ruin the displays altogether. I would recommend you to look here for a more permanent solution:

This quote works now, seems to be happening somewhat random and if I respond to people in PM’s with quotes my messages simply end up being empty to them.

I agree with Runnerpack’s comments on glitchy displays. Some displays let themselves be repaired easier than others, especially if you have heated them up before. It might render your displays irreparable if you are unlucky as it doesn’t happen too often. But again, when it happens you need to acquire a new set of displays which can be a pain in more ways than one.
How do you guys print these, what program do you guys use? I have the cases here for a long time, but never got to print them. Shame on me, since Benjamin helped me out with these a long time ago by being my proxy.

This, I know there is some manual labor done on the FB+ and these things can unfortunately happen. I understand you are wanting to troubleshoot here, but these kind of things are pretty obviously a technical problem which has to be solved by the maker of the FB+ and I am sure he will help you out as good and quickly as he can.
No real need to put it on the board if you ask me 😉 no offense intended, just been seeing these things here lately while the shortest route to solve these things is just to go back to the seller of the item.
