Oh, and speaking of the Virtual Boy mall tour (Nintendo news vol.2 issue 9 page 2), here’s a Virtual Boy mall tour pamphlet…
There is one of these already pictured on this site, but this one is in its most purest form, meaning that it never had a “schedule of events” or a “mall stamp” ever placed on the last page.
I can’t help but think, that there must exist some sort of Nintendo/Pepsi advertising that mentions the Virtual Boy, since it’s mentioned in these newsletters that Pepsi joined Nintendo to bring holiday cheer to millions of video game players with a $10 off Virtual Boy coupon…
So there must be some ol’ Pepsi packaging like cans/bottles or even store promo ads like in the pictures below, promoting the Virtual Boy.
Does anyone here remember such Pepsi advertising from back in the day?

I’m starting to think that these newsletters were Not something that was given out at trade shows. Instead, I think they were only given to store managers that had subscriptions to Nintendo Power magazine. And here’s why…
Look at the picture provided below and you will notice that the vol 2 issue 11 newsletter looks like a page that was ripped right out of Nintendo Power #75.
Now notice the newsletter says “USE MAGIC GLASSES TO EXPERIENCE OUR FIRST 3-D NEWSLETTER”. Well, we all know that NP#75 came with “MAGIC” glasses, and they work perfectly with the newsletter since it has the same color scheme as the NP#75 magazine.
Check out the back of the newsletter, it’s filled with information that would only mean something to a store manager.
And now look at the cover of newsletter vol 2 issue 9 and compare it to the cover of NP#77, notice anything?! The newsletter matches the NP magazine.
And then they punched 3 holes through the newsletters so they could be placed in a binder since they weren’t attached to the magazine.

What kills me is that picture of ya boy Ken Griffey. Ever notice the size of that cartridge sticking out that Virtual Boy? Looks like Griffey noticed it, and Nintendo broke his hand for trying to touch it, and then said “now get back behind the Virtual Boy so we can take this picture, and put a smile on that face will ya”. Haha
Ken Griffey Jr was inducted in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame just lastnight, I can’t help but think that he owes it all to that one picture of him and the Virtual Boy :)….(jk)

Sears actually does seem like a place that could have had their employees wearing such vests, now that you mention it.
Yeah, it really does actually. Check out this picture of a Sears Environment and Glasscase used in 1995. A Virtual Boy shirt under that Mario statue, and probably a bunch of VB paraphernalia on top and inside the Glasscase.

The only thing that had me thinking there was a possibility for it being used elsewhere other than Toys ‘R’ Us, was a auction for one of these vests wich you might recall (pretty sure it’s in the Noteworthy). The seller had this vest paired with the Red and Black Virtual Boy hat, wich had me thinking the vest was used by Sears employees since the hat supposedly comes from Sears. The hat matches this vest rather well as seen in the picture below. With the Black swooping around the hat and vest, it definitely looks like this hat is part of the ensemble.
But that auction was atleast 2 years ago and I’ve since seen two more of these vests with no hats. Both, including mine had Toys ‘R’ Us connections, and now seeing yours with the Toys ‘R’ Us name tag is making me believe the possibility for it being a Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive vest even more.
Plus since the hat is way more common than the vest, makes it hard for me to believe employees kept the hats but got rid of the vests. So that seller probably came across that hat and paired it with the vest on their own.
To me, so far everything points to Toys ‘R’ Us.
