Here are my submissions for a certain Virtual Boy horror game… I made a few variations… … I could probably keep nitpicking and working on them, but I’m satisfied enough now to avoid going on forever with it. Feel free to let me know if there are any problems though.

I’m posting only two of your images here with the outlined text because it again shows that text looks best with an outline. I like both the white and black versions.

I checked your gray levels and they’re not the correct values. That’s why the scene has lost a gray level. Update them and I’ll rerun. I’d recommend your versions with text outlined by the opposite gray shade. Once you fix the gray levels these should look pretty good. You can see the last attachment where I adjusted the thresholds specifically for your image.

I think moving forward I’ll only test images that are in the correct format. Otherwise I have to rerun images.

Im just giving ideas because Ive never done this before. This one looks more black and white.

Hi,

You need to change your images size to 264×176. They’re all too big.

Thanks,
Kevin

Can something like this be done?

Sure. You’ll want to play with the grays. There’s a lot of it in this image and it will look flat.
I’ll put it on the display and show you what it looks like.

Re-posting my Mario Clash one since I needed to readjust its gray levels.

That works. Nice job. I won’t repost because it looks like the one I posted with the red PCB cover. I just don’t have to tweak anything now.

Here’s the Greenleaf one. I had to tweak the thresholding though so you need to adjust your gray levels. With some work this label could work.

ImageJ is another one that is easy to use to check gray levels.
I use Gimp as well.

I made a template for myself and anyone else to use. 🙂

Great! Thanks.

Another few tips that may help. I’ve noticed that any text looks much better if there’s a black outline to it. And also remember you can dither to simulate other gray levels. Dither isn’t always the best choice but it can help.

This is not the new design for the cover and it has a smaller opening, but this gives you a feel for what things look like with a cover on.

I love the red contrast… maybe they should be red PCBs instead of black. Hmmm….

OK, here are the current entry images on an actual eInk display. Overall, nice job to everyone.

Few comments for feedback.

1. The ones that emphasize white and black seem to show much cleaner.
2. Ianel, I couldn’t convert yours as its png and not bmp.
3. Some of the images display much better after I stretch the contrast, such as the tydyedsyko image. I don’t want to modify peoples images so make sure you have true blacks and whites.
4. The resolution of some of the images is low and causing them to look blurry.
5. VNES, if you update your gray levels your image will improve significantly. See my follow up post below when I had the incorrect gray level thresholds.

I updated the original post. VirtuousRage caught an error that was causing gray levels to note be displayed correctly. It’s been fixed. Thanks!

I should also note that they look slightly better on the actual eInk display than the close up images I’ve attached. That’s primarily because on the real display its not quite so zoomed in.

Nice work!

Here is my first attempt at pixel art ever. Going to start another one but might come back to this to add more. We’ll see I guess.

I really like this one. Nice job.

Awesome. They’re all looking good. I ran out of time last night but I’ll start putting these up on the actual eInk display and post some pictures here.

I am unsure if I got this in 24bit format. Would you let me know if its a good format for you before I try some more?

Thanks!!

Cool. I’ll try it tonight.

You may want to stretch your contrast out. Lots of grays and black, but no white in your image. It will look better if you use all 4 shades.

And the small text may not show well.

Since I missed the first batch, I’m definitely gonna try my hand at this.

Just to be clear:
Is there a limit to number of entries per person?

In the last photo it looks like the art needs to be offset to the left side of the image, so the red box will be the primary art area?

Just want my entries to be valid =P

As many entries as you’d like.

Yes the red box is the primary art area.

I just sent out an update to all HyperFlash orders. I had a few email bounces. Please check your Paypal email address and make sure its up to date. This is the easiest way for me to grab everyone’s email and send out group updates. Thanks.

Cross posting here. I posted this on Discord yesterday.
And for anyone following, I post pretty regularly to the Discord channel. The most recent updates and progress of the work on HyperFlash can be found there.

Here are some eInk test labels. Images definitely need to be optimized for the display. So users adding their own images will be doable but don’t expect great results unless you tweak them for the display. As time goes on I’ll try to add more labels for existing games but also hope the VB community will do their own.

Yep, that’s me. Trying to sell it to pay for some milled FR4 VB cart case prototypes.

I really wish someone would take one of these updated emulators and back port it to something that’s not stuck on those expensive goggles. I like vbjin enough but it’s not perfect either by any means.

You can get an Oculus Go for about the same price as a VB.

A black chopped fiber regular case.

I’m not familiar with the particular machine you’re using, but maybe the fill issues could be mitigated by pre-heating the mold. It would slow down the cycle, as you’d have to wait longer before demolding, and then again to reheat it, but if it lets you use the material you want and get good results, maybe it’s worth a try.
Perhaps you could semi-automate it by using Peltier-effect devices to both heat and cool the mold more rapidly.

Good idea. We’re preheating the mold now. Better results but still not sufficient. We’ve even went so high that it burns the material. The machine doesn’t push the material out fast enough for the thin case walls.

Good idea. We’re preheating the mind now. Better results but still not sufficient. We’ve even went so high that it burns the material. The machine doesn’t push the material out fast enough for the thin case walls.
