Maybe using a PC emulator to run linux or windows?

I agree that the tools should compile fine under OSX with minimal tweaking, though, but I for one couldn’t help with that. The last Mac I used ran OS 7.5 😀

I hope you can get it sorted, though.

Looks like you would have to rebuild it using an older compiler…

Well, I tried VC6 under Win98 and the resulting DLL won’t even run on the XP PC 😕

I had to change the sprintf_s calls into sprintf ones, but this shouldn’t have made a difference, should it?

(If only VIDE would say why it didn’t load a particular plugin…)

So, I decided to go with the other option and reshape the dialog; which you seem to have purposefully made a particularly difficult task… 😛

Neither does the swap colors plugin which was built with VS 2005, so I guess you never tried that one?

Honestly, I’d be hard pressed to find a reason to use that one at all 😛 but I guess you had your reasons…

Anyways, you don’t really need to be able to see the whole window to use the plugin. Just use the default timer interval and refrain from using the bottom tiles in the charset 😉

Are you sure you don’t work on M$’s debugging team? 😛

That sounds like a “workaround” they probably come up with all the time. 😉

WOOT! Just patched and built under MinGW with nary a hitch!

Now to investigate the color mapping switches idea…

Hi, Dan! 😉

Dude! This plugin is brilliant! And thank you soooo much for releasing the source to your plugins!

I’m going to discuss this plugin now, but I don’t want anyone thinking that I’m complaining, because I realize that these problems are my own fault…

First, the plugin only runs in “NT-based” versions of Windows. While this is a little confusing, it is understandable considering how M$ prefers filthy lucre over its users… But, I digress…

After finding this out, I decided to try it on my (XP powered) laptop. Oops, new problem: The LCD is 1024×768 and the window doesn’t quite fit.

So, since I have the source, I have basically two options: I can modify the window to put the chars and controls beside the map and it will just fit on my laptop, or (preferably) I can try to get it to run on 98 and use my desktop. This will be difficult because:

1) VIDE itself runs fine in 98,
2) there are no error messages, either from Windows or VIDE, and
3) A cursory glance at the code and compiler settings doesn’t seem to show anything NT-specific.

Though I have been considering it for a while, I’m still putting off the third option: installing XP on the desktop. The fourth, buying a new PC, is still well outside my budget…

But, if you have at least an 820-some-odd vertical screen res and XP/2K/Vista then have fun with this great plugin. But, if you are, for whatever reason, unable to view the whole window, let me know the particulars so I have more incentive to modify this thing and know which of the above options would be best to pursue. And if you’re familiar with Win32 code, I would be very grateful indeed if you could figure out why it won’t load in Win98.

Well, when Chris brought up the idea of the coding competition, I was looking forward to all the cool VB programs that would be produced, but I completely failed to realize that a bunch of new tools would come out, too! Between this, dasi’s grit-VB, and VIDE 2.0, the graphical and coding sides are all sewn up! Now, somebody make some more music/sound tools for complete music/sound-idiots (like me)! You can start with source for a VB .NSF player. 😉

I didn’t know this tool existed, but I was thinking of making this exact thing from scratch. Thanks for beating me to it! 😉

It’ll be great when I get a proper build system going. I can just edit the bitmaps and make will automatically pick up the changes.

However, not to pick nits, but I think since it’s under GPL you are required to release your source/changes. Thanks for the patch, dasi!

BTW, a handy option would be a way to specify which palette indices/colors are mapped to which VB pixel values. Maybe something like:

-p0 n
-p1 n
-p2 n
-p3 n

where n is a palette index (or HTML-style color?) in the source file.

Of course, with source I could probably add this myself… 😎

Surprise of all surprises! RunnerPack has suggestions for something!? Get outta town! 😉

1. I second DogP’s idea and add that maybe some simple cropping and other adjustments might be possible before the import happens, too.

2. Speaking of the Map Builder, why do I have to add a blank Charset to the project before I can use it?

3. Also, red is fine and dandy, but how about color selection for each of the shades displayed in the editors? If nothing else, it would allow tweaking the gamma ramp of the red shades to simulate in-game BRT effects.

4. How about letting us resize the Project Scheme/Message log window so we can ACTUALLY READ THEM?! 😉

5. Open source the main program and plugins.

6. “Remove clones” functions that don’t break maps using the charset. It doesn’t have to adjust the map automatically, just make the clone chars black or put an “X” in them or something.

7. Maybe incorporate emulator frontend style options for running the new ROM? (Plugin-able to allow for new/changed emus?)

8. Full-screen preview?

9. Everything that has options (emu options, palette colors, editor fonts, etc.) should have a combo-box to store and retrieve favorite settings quickly. See the Goldwave sound editor for an example.

10. Configurable hot-keys for all menu items and toolbar buttons.

That should be enough to get you started 😉

BTW, welcome back to the scene, Alberto! 😀

(There goes my last shred of hope for 3rd place ;-))

DogP’s skillz do indeed pay the proverbial billz 😛

Hey, with KR155E running the contest and DogP not entering, I may actually have a chance! 😉

Although, there are still Jorge and DanB to contend with… 🙁

Well, 3rd place is still not bad. 😀

But, seriously, this contest is far from a lock no matter who enters. Plus, it’s important to the scene (such as it is…) that everyone who possibly can enters something, no matter how good or bad they think their entry is! With an open vote, you never know how it’ll turn out! Wait till you see the absolute rubbish I come up with! 😛

I agree with the comment by “ender.”

The fact that the articles in the paper version are the same poor quality is one of the many reasons I don’t subscribe…

I want to make one just to reduce the cable tangle somewhat… Honestly, who powers a system through the controller?!? It’s like having a PSU inside your mouse! 😛

Plus, I have the aftermarket “Performance” adapter and the wire seems really thin and cheap. It could break with enough wear. Plus, it’s permanently attached, so it could break the way cheap headphones always do: at the “strain-relief” end.

Anyone know where to get (or have any extra) free samples of Li-ion monitor/charging chips? I have enough cells from an old laptop pack to make a few of these…

First of all, great work, DogP! I knew you could and would do it, but that was really fast! 😀

Second, it might be the angle between the camera and the TV, but the aspect ratio looks about right, yet the whole screen is filled… How is this possible with the VB’s 12:7 AR and the TV’s 4:3 AR? Does the picture look “squished” at all? If so, do you plan on adding “letterbox” (or “pillarbox” for 16:9) mode?

I second NamelessPlayer’s request for a cheap single-output device version; but I would prefer VGA for better stereo–both anaglyph and shutter. Also, I don’t care if it’s external and connected to the VB by some kind of umbilicus.

I had another idea, too:
For the shutter and mono modes, you could have some kind of RGB adjustment knobs so a player could tint the screen to match the level/area of the game. Like blue for the Wario swimming levels, green for Mario’s tennis, etc.

This would also be handy for adjusting the anaglyph to reduce cross-talk. BTW, have you tried Green/Magenta anaglyph? I’m still working on getting a better magenta filter, but so far it looks much better than red/blue. When I figure out the magenta, I’ll post some good Roscolux filter numbers to try.

Whew! Long post! 😀

Yes, there should be a slight “whirring” hum and almost imperceptible vibration even with no game.

It’s most likely the corroded battery terminal(s). I’m not sure of the best way to clean them, since they are so hard to get to.

On most things I use sandpaper or another abrasive. Maybe you could use vinegar or some other mild acid to dissolve it… Just be sure to clean it out and dry it thoroughly before use!

Note: don’t attempt this if you’re stupid 😛

I think I narrowed it down to some code that’s called when a “?PHPSESSID=” is added to the “http://www.vr32.de/modules/news/index.php” URL.

If I delete that, the sidebar loads.

Here’s my crazy and probably too complicated idea for fixing a messed-up display that still won’t work after DogP’s baking method:

Get some of this:

http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G16133

And make or obtain a fine stencil or silk-screen. Use it to put some of the glue on each connection pad (PCB trace) and carefully stick on the cable.

It may also be possible to use a comb-like contrivance to scrape the glue from between the pads after spreading a layer over the whole area. It depends on the adhesion and viscosity characteristics of the glue…

I told you it was complicated and crazy… 😛

(BTW, I hereby disclaim all liability if you try it and glue your face to your VB, or something ;-))

Actually, it’s only the comment on the “Red Dragon for PSP” article that I can’t read.

http://www.vr32.de/modules/news/article.php?storyid=232

And article posting works now, so *shrug*

I have only four words for Dan. The first two are: Good work! 🙂

And the other two are:

OPEN!!!

SOURCE!!!

😛

-RunnerPack

Let’s see, broken vs. working… which one is more valuable… That’s a tough one! 😛

Also, I don’t agree with edracon; don’t sell the ugly one after the switch. For one thing, who would buy a VB with bad and unfixable displays? (you were going to mention that, right?)

For another, you can keep it for spare parts (cart sockets don’t last forever…) or to test painting techniques and other mods before you do them to your working one (which you probably wouldn’t do judging by the “value” comment, but there it is…)

You could also make a cool VB themed art piece with it. For example, you could gut it, put some bright red LEDs (perhaps the flickering kind) inside and mount the lens side a few cms from the wall to cast a cool red glow behind it as it appears to hover there.

Hey, that actually sounds pretty cool…

(If you do that, I’ll pay shipping for you to send the guts to me ;-))

Why not put the good displays from the ugly VB in the good looking VB?

I have also done cygwin. It seems like I had some small hicups, but I don’t remember what they were, and it went well for the most part.

If not being able to follow the build instructions keeps you from VB dev’ing, you probably won’t do much, anyway 😛 (Or, in my case, even if you get it built you won’t do anything :-P)

Word to the wise, though: I tried it first on MSys; long story short: nada. Maybe someone smarter could make it go… (Which would rock, BTW).

@KR155E:

Not only should you NOT have an “adult” area on PVB, you should immediately delete this thread.

@The OP:

It’s perverts like you that give not only message boards but the entire internet a negative image.

You should have enough common courtesy (not to mention shame) to refrain from posting this kind of garbage on an open forum. Many of the users of this site are barely teenagers! (As I assume you are from your obvious lack of maturity).

Some suggestions:
1. Get your mind out of the gutter.
2. Find something useful to do with your time.
or, at least,
3. Find someplace else to disgust people.
and,
4. Realize that your hateful and ignorant flames would be useless and just don’t post them. An apology would be more appropriate, anyway.
