I picked up my brand new CIB copy of Vertical Force off eBay for about 10 bucks shipped not too long ago. Just keep an eye out, usually the ones from Japan are the cheapest.

the vbjin port for the rift may have something to say about that. =) especially with a vb controller-to-usb kit.

Ahh, I didn’t think of the VB controller to USB kit.

Alas I’m a purist though..

The closest thing to Pokemon on the VB is using MK’s gameboy emulator to run Pokemon Red (or whatever).

There is no way to emulate the look/feel/sound/control of the actual console properly in my opinion.

Did anyone get SML 2 to work yet? I see the gameplay demo come on, but get booted out of the saved file menu before I can play.

No, Mario land 2 doesn’t work, it does just as you said. Mario land 3 however, does. It’s odd because they both use a similar save file screen..

I think its funny that so many people think its uncomfortable to play the VB. I don’t even use a table. I just set the VB stand on my gut and play it that way, and I’ve never had any issues. I do understand that not everyone is overweight though lol. I also lay down and situate the system to comfortably sit that way too

That works?? Wish I had a gut so I could try it =P

…actually I’m gonna try it anyway.

Here’s another one on another website.

I dunno if the other ones are like this, but this one put the system in a pretty crappy light. So I left this comment on the bottom:

“Jesus Christ, you just couldn’t write an article with the VB in it without snarky remarks about crying after a minute of play.

If there’s a whole website complete with talented developers devoted to the system maybe JUST MAYBE it’s not as crappy as you think it is.

Douche”

Kitchen table, I play 15 minutes every morning, I’m single. lol

Also my kitchen is my radio controlled boat building center, does anyone want a recipe for Titebond glue and balsa wood?

Hey, mine’s on the kitchen table too =P

I never use the thing for eating, that’s what the living room couch is for =P

I don’t get the hate for the red and black. Technically, it was either that or nothing. You couldn’t get any other color LED’s at the time without being dim and power hungry, not to mention the lowered resolution to fit the two extra colored LEDs into the array.
Personally I don’t find it weird at all, I kinda like it actually. It kinda makes it seem bad ass in a way. Or maybe because Red and black was always my favorite color scheme =P

I find the display WAY easier to see than the handheld alternative that was available at that time, the original puke green gameboy screen. The VB had none of the blur the GB had due to crappy refresh rates of old LCDs. All the graphics are crystal clear on the VB.

The controller is awesome and ahead of it’s time. It’s basically a precursor to the dual analogue, which didn’t come out until a couple years later. Not to mention is just feels good in the hand.

The games are just awesome on the VB. I could probably write a couple paragraphs on just this, but I’m gonna keep this short. I like how they seemed to try really hard to make these games unique, with awesome results like Wario Land, Red Alarm, and Bound high.

What don’t I like about it?

Lack of games & ribbon cable, duh, I’m sure we all agree here.

If you break the stand your kind of screwed. The VB I played when I was younger didn’t have a stand..let me tell you, it’s damn awkward trying to prop this thing up on chairs and other random bits of furniture and successfully play. I think more accessories for playing in different scenarios would have really helped.. Most notably an elastic head band to keep it in place when lying down or sitting reclined in a chair would have been a nice option.

Other than that I don’t have too much to complain about. I find it a really solid system.

Nice update MK! The glitching has practically disappeared. Good job, man!

Proto, Did you perchance name your output file gbemu.vb? That would make whatever games you flashed that time to permanently be injected into the emulator. I accidentally did that once, just wasn’t thinking. I just redownloaded it and all is good now.

How the hell do the games released not make good use of the technology? Red Alarm is a GREAT example of how the 3D effect can take a bunch of lines and give them spacial depth so that our brains can make good sense of it all.

Not to mention one of the first lines:
“have you read the headlines lately?”
Yeah…I’m gonna base my opinions on headlines from story hungry journalists. If I wanted information that’s blown way out of proportion I’d watch Fox news.

These two point take any credibility this video had and smashes it against a brick wall. Just because the majority wants to play remake after remake of the same mindless games with no imagination doesn’t mean Nintendo should have made an Xbox. Pretty sure Nintendo is trying to stay away from that crap.

Another idiot who thinks it’s cool to rip on Nintendo for a system that failed without actually ever trying the system.

Nothing to see here, just another stupid countdown video thrown together for other mind numb idiots to watch in between Call of Duty matches.

This is a VERY hard choice! Good Job to all the entrants, you all deserve a 10!

Are you closing the program before unplugging the cart? I find I get an error if I leave the program open and unplug the flashboy. I just close the program first to avoid it.

I play it on the table like normal. Although I set it on my Firebird service manual (I’d guess a good 2″ thick), which gets it to a more comfortable height. Hunching hurts my back, so with the extended height I can play without issues.

Yes, that’s something I have to fix. But at the moment it’s a bit difficult to test it on real hardware, because my displays are extremely glitchy.

Here’s a new version with fixed 3D feature.
BTW the 3D effect works best with vertical shooters:

Alright, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something wrong. Ahh, yes, that would make it a bit hard I suppose.

Another update! Thanks for the continued work on this!

Awesome, thanks man! Much easier! I’m gonna strive to beat Mario land on my VB now =P

Wow, that runs awesome for you in that video. This is what it looks like on my Virtual Boy.

Probably best to view at 720p or 1080p. It’s hard to see in Mario land in this video since they happen so quickly, but you can sometimes see the garbled game bits that blink in and out. It’s much easier to see in the zelda portion, where character sprites get kinda messed. Does it do that for you on hardware?

Of course! A patch! Thanks MK, that’s perfect!

Thanks for the update MK!

Things I’ve noticed:

The status text indeed no longer scrolls in Mario Land. Still blinky graphical glitches (this occurs in every game though)

Mario Land 2 still won’t get past the title screen. I have noticed if you wait for the demo the demo level works, so it’s just the save select screen that’s borked. Oddly enough all is fine with Mario Land 3, even though it incorporates a similar save select screen.

Bomberman is now playable as the characters are now visible.

The lady at the Pokecenter still steals your Pokemon from you in Red.

Something I’ve wondered, is it possible to have an option to switch the A and B buttons? It’d be nice to be able to have it like the gameboy originally is, it appears to be backwords.

Thanks again, really appreciate the update and the possibility of further work on this project.
