I ended up purchasing a modded NES Classic with 693 USA and European games, 131 Famicom games, 46 Famicom Disk System games, 87 unlicensed and unreleased NES games, and 68 hacks and homebrew games for NES. It might take a while for me to test out a lot of the games to see if most of them run okay, but if I find any issues, I’ll mention them here. I actually wasn’t planning to buy an NES Classic at all, given that it would only have 30 games, but once I learned that I could get one with just about every NES game ever made, it all of a sudden became more interesting. I think it’s now a great little unit that pays good homage to the original Nintendo.

Heh… that actually sounds like a good possibility.

Yeah, I’m definitely convinced that these systems would have been used at any kind of trade show and the like shortly before the Virtual Boy’s launch date, and perhaps they were even sent to retailers near the launch date. Nintendo must have really been keeping the selling price tight with the costs for them not to have included these batteries with the retail units.

I can’t introduce it all due to the amount of page space, but I’ll mention the suspicious-looking foreigner, my second Vectrex, four copies of “Mansion of Insmouse” purchased by hand for barter, dollar bills hidden in a shoe box….

22. Waterworld
As if dealing a finishing blow to that major folly of a movie, starring Kevin Costner, aka “future middle-aged Kevin,” this one stands out from numerous software by offering a single piece of music and screen design. The game content resembles a 3D River Patrol, but without having even a fraction of the amount of different scenes.

I want to add here that I believe this is the “tribute feature” to Yokoi (who had already been killed prior to the publication of this guide) mentioned on the front cover of the guidebook, but I find this manga to be rather disturbing. I’m quite confident that I’ve translated everything accurately, in accordance with the original Japanese information, though I may have censored some of the harsh language a bit, so it’s the original information that saddens me:

Even though it doesn’t quite satisfy the request on this thread, I figured I would provide some 300 ppi scans of the Platform Display flyer inserts. Each flyer insert is a sheet of cardstock paper measuring 12.75 inches from top to bottom and 5.25 inches from left to right. The fronts of the flyers have a glossy, photo-quality finish over everything, while the backs of both flyers are a plain white color with no glossy finish.

You caught me at a good time, as I was already planning to do some Virtual Boy scanning this evening.

Yeah, I’d also place my bet on the vinyl one, if it isn’t one that is hitherto unknown. I guess it makes sense that the rare items that were originally the smallest and cheapest would be the hardest ones to find these days, as they were likely all thrown out and/or burned with hardly a care in the world, while the larger items were kept either because they were too big to throw out or because it was thought that they could get some resale value later on, which is certainly the case with VB collectors.

This tragedy of game machines, which has also been called the Hallucigenia of the game industry, still keeps tremorously shaking our optimistic mentalities, which tell us that the games are cheerful and enjoyable even now.

This is mostly a book resulting from pestering, compiled for the purpose of exposing to the full light of day the potentially shocking truth revealed from following the footprints of the Virtual Boy, which ended up being destroyed, with a small amount of material being left behind.

Do we have examples of the Virtual Boy Banner and Virtual Boy Poster shown on that order form? I can’t imagine that banner being the “Demo Here” Banner, but maybe it was, or maybe it’s the vinyl one. I also can’t think of what the poster would have been, and it looks like they were simply handing them to stores for free.

On Pages 3-7, 9 & 17 of the Virtual Boy Memorial Commemorative Guidebook, Revised Second Edition, the original author gave his own personal judgment rating, out of a possible 100, for each of the commercially released Virtual Boy games, as well as the price for which each game was selling in Akihabara (or at the selling location overseas) shortly before the time of publication of the guidebook. Virtual Bomberman and Virtual Double Yakuman, etc. clearly should have been completed, but they chose to dare to cancel the releases rather than try to recover development costs through the releases, which really tells about the sales of the Virtual Boy. Unreleased Accessory

●Adjustable Stand

★ Everytime this author would contact Nintendo about this adjustable stand, its release would be prolonged by another month. It is a product of memories, which in the end got indefinitely postponed. It was announced at the show that it should have been a standard accessory, but it seems that it was to be sold separately to reduce costs. Even if the costs had gone up a little in exchange for the one with the bent legs, couldn’t it have had a little different selling price if it had come with this one? But I think that when it’s too late. It would now be nice to have a good phone call with Nintendo, which doesn’t even think of its customers as customers.

ボーイの売れ行きのほどを物語っている。
また、この他海外でも、オリジナルタイトルを
リリースした気の毒なメーカーが数社あったと
聞くが、その後の安否が気遣われる。

●アジャスタブルスタンド

★このアジャスタブルスタンドは筆者が荏天堂に
問い合わせるたびに1カ月づつ発売が延び、
しまいに無期延期となってしまった思い出の品
である。ショー発表時には、標準付属品だった
はずがコストダウンのために別売となったらしい。
あのへなへなの足のかわりに多少値が上がっても
こっちを付属にしてくれたら少しは評価も違ったの
では? とも思うが後の祭り。客を客とも思わない
荏天堂のすばらしい電話の応対ぶりも
今となってはなつかしい。
