I would LOVE if you made the next act for snatcher. The first act was so good. I had never played that game before your port and it was awesome! I’d love to see how the story continues.
Yeah, I really need to get back to it. It’s been almost a year.

There’s a very simple argument for the Select button: without the Select button, the VB pad would not be as nicely symmetric as it is.
I always liked the two symmetric d-pads. It looks silly at first. However, they are clearly designed to enable playing FPS similar to the way you play them with dual analog sticks nowadays. I always wondered if Sony’s famous dual analog stick controller got inspired by the Virtual Boy. It was released in late 96 after all.

I liked the video. Are you the guy who made it? Always nice to see when someone actually checks stuff out and isn’t just phishing for clicks.

Are there any plans on future repro releases or has it come to an indefinite halt after Fishbone?
I’m not involved in making the repos but I was wondering what games you would like to see being released? Most homebrews and prototypes have been done.
The only thing I can think of is a translated Virtual Fishing. However, that one is not fully translated yet (because I’m a lazy bastard). Also, it is a horrible game.

Would the VB’s power be cut in half if it had to draw two completely different screens at the same time?If you want to basically cut the VB’s processing power in half, have it play two completely different games… one using the left screen, speaker, buttons, etc… and the other using the right ones. 😉

Heh, that could actually be interesting. Like playing Tetris on one eye while playing Breakout on the other. I bet Ben can do it.
I just bought this vb themed motorcycle.

http://www.uncletusk.com/27-virtual-boy usually charges $15 for Boxes and $30- $35 for Boxes including manuals and inlays. I always thought that’s quite expensive but his quality is also very very high. They are actually often mistaken for the real thing.
In the end the price really depends on the quality. I made some Boxes myself which cost me like $2 to make. No one would ever mistakes those for Originals though.

It’s been a bit of a nightmare to be honest. I had threats from people, and Capcom definitely do chase up copyrights.

I always wonder what kind of person would do these kind of things (the threatening). I guess someone young who wants to feel powerful for a change.
I always liked that the vb community is not like that. Everyone shares their bit, whether it is making games, sharing source code snippets to enable others, pointing out auctions, repairing display and broken vb, writing books, making shirts, sharing scans, doing translations or just participating in the general discussions.
That’s actually the reason why I’m still around. People are just nice here. No one cares if the same “my displays are broken” thread is created over and over again and no one gets tired responding.
One thing I know for sure though. This place would exist today without Minestorm. The Flashboy and all the reproduction carts made this place worthwhile. So thanks for that.
I just gave it a quick look. Looks very professional. Good job.
That’s actually an interesting read. Thanks for sharing.

Is there any known information about making repro cartridges? For example is it possible to use a “Mario Tenis” game and change rom with an eeprom?I wish to own a copy of “faceball remastered” and/or “bound high!” in the future. I would love a copy of Hyper fighter aswell 😛 but since that rom can not be released -.-” this probably won’t happen.
So… any possoble help in making repro’s? Or buying them?
If you are just looking to play homebrews, prototypes and the like I suggest you get yourself a Flashboy+. Minestorm is still selling them I think.
If you are looking for the Repos that have been sold in the past you might be out of luck. Some pop up on ebay from time to time but they often sell way over price. It is always a good idea to contact bigmak when it comes to repos.

Hey thunder, are you back to working on releasing the tools now that the Virtual Fishing patch is out?Instead or right and left images, could the image converter also create separate images for all (non-empty) z layers? I wonder if this could be used to create 3D scenes to walk around in with a playable character, much like Resident Evil.
I actually still need to finalize the Virtual Fishing patch. My work kept me quite busy lately so I didn’t get around doing any VB stuff. I will definitely go back to Snatcher early next year.
I don’t think the converter can output images like that. I actually thought about that idea for a game once. What you would want to do is model your 2D image as an actual 3D environment (maybe with blender?) and then use that model to produce your depth map (for the 3D conversion) and your data for the collision detection. You can then place a player sprite in the scene. You could use a affine map to scale the player sprite according to it’s position on the z-layer.

Is Kinect really a failure?
If you look at the sales numbers of the original Kincet it was quite successful. It sold sold 8 million units in its first 60 days and has received the Guinness World Record of being the “fastest selling consumer electronics device”. I think it sold something like 24 million units. The new Kincet (that came with the XBox One) didn’t sell that well. It is hard to say if that is the Kincets fault or because it was bundled with the XBox One (which didn’t sell that great). However, the XBox One sales doubled after removal of Kinect from the bundle.
The big problem with the Kinect (as a gaming device) is the low number of quality games. There have been some fun ones but it just couldn’t make it’s way into AAA titles. The reason for that is that big game developers would shy away from Kinect games because it would split their market. 24 millions seems allot but the xbox 360 sold 84 million units. So you can always sell more copies if you make the Kinect optional.
From that point of view making the Kinect mandatory for the XBox One was a good move. However, Microsoft couldn’t pull it off. By now they even removed the Kinect support from the controller. There are also barely any games supporting it.
So while the Kinect was commercially successful it still failed to deliver. My guess is that VR will fail the same way. People (including me) will buy it because it is an cool idea but after a while it will fade away.

… with the Wii U and 3DS’s kind of disappointing sales…
Actually, the 3DS sales numbers are far away from disappointing. By now (summing up all variations) it sold ~54 million units with sales numbers constantly increasing. It has a strong library of first- and third party games. For comparison, the SNES sold 49 million units, the N64 32 million. The 3DS of course is still going. It might not end up as successful as the GameBoy (118 million) but it is doing quite well.
Personally, I don’t like mobile gaming, mostly because of the bad controls and low quality games. Most of the games are repetitive time-killer that aren’t worth their low asking price. I hope Nintendo will never hit the “Free to play” market and rather deliver fun games at a fair asking price (like they always used to do).
While the Wii U is without any doubt not selling as well as the 3DS (10 million units) it is still outselling the XBOX One. It also has a very strong lineup of games, mostly first-party though.
As for the chances of a Nintendo-VR Console… I hope they won’t do it. Nintendo always tried to differentiate themselves using harware innovations that would make the experience more fun. Personally, I think VR will fail the same way the Kinect failed.

Cool stuff. Need to check it out later.
I just had a look at a Long Play. There are actually a number of screens after you beat the game that still need a translation… puh.

Started at a penny, clearly states it has been released in 2013, not a reseller judging from his 6 reviews. Just a guy selling his copy. Seems cool to me.

Maybe this could be a future physical release!
If it is completely translated and tested this might happen. It will have a “Reproduction-Card” stamp on the box to avoid scams if it happens.
