I added three more enemy types to level 4 this evening. One more enemy type and I can continue with level 3.
It wasn’t that easy to make all of Bens sprites look good in motion but I’m pretty happy with the results.
I added 3 copies of the first enemy to level 4. Most of it is copy and past but it takes time as I have to check the movement, animation, spawning and collision detection for every enemy.
One enemy type done, 4 more to go. After that I have to take care of level 3. The enemies there are special that’s why I do them at end. But I think I will stop for today.
I had some problems finding enough space for the sprites again. The problem was that I didn’t remembered correctly how the font system works. Thereby I messed everything up. However, I found a nice workaround that hopefully works.
Now I can proceed adding the remaining enemies for level 3 and 4.

I always wonder if someone reads this.I do. But I don’t comment… because there is nothing to comment on. The development of this game seems to be very smooth. Or maybe you just don’t tell us about those bugs that break the whole game and take hours to discover but are actually caused by one typo in the code.
I only remember one Bug like that during the Fishbone development. It took me an whole day to figure out what was going wrong. I had that all of the time with GameHero though.
Got mine today. It’s looking great.

That sounds tedious. Although I know absolutely nothing about the technical aspects of what you are doing, I still find it interesting to read your updates. It’s like a behind the scenes sneak peak.
I always wonder if someone reads this. I basically publish my svn log here. I thought it might be interesting for some people to see how much work doing a game like this actually is for me.
Btw, I added the background sprites for level 4 to the game. I had to change the sprites again, as the ones I got from Ben were to small to fit the whole screen. So I moved stuff around until it looked decent.
Today I spent around 3 hours to make maps out of the sprites from Ben. As Ben only provides me with the images I have to move them around and change stuff to make them fit into a charmap. I had to remove some details and had to use nearly every free space I could find but I managed to fit everything in. This is an extremely annoying kind of work but someone has to do it…
This doesn’t mean all of the enemies are in the game now. It just means that I managed to find some space for all of the sprites. The next thing to do is actually add the enemy objects, define the swimming and killing animations and configure the bounding boxes.
Again some dull work that consumes allot of time.
Can’t wait for mine. We just had snow… have to freeze myself to skip the waiting time…

I changed the order of the background sprites of level 3. It is now as intended by Ben. I think it looked better before but then again I don’t really care.
OK… I fixed all of the issues in the Midi-Player and added the music to the existing levels and screens. I may switch songs later but it is ok for now. I also adjusted the volume so that the sound effects are louder then the background music.
This means I’m done with the music. The next thing to do is change the level layout of level 3 so that it looks like intended by Ben. After that I will add the new enemies for level 3. That kind of work is rather dull so I might not do it this weekend.
Great video. Sums everything up pretty nicely. It also fits perfectly to the time of the year with all of the “game of the year” awards and stuff.

Hey thunder,
can you send us some examples from the sounds.
VB
There won’t be any more demos until I’m done.
OK, I spent allot of time on finding music that somehow fits into the game. Obviously the problem is that not every midi can simply be converted to sound great on the VB. I also didn’t want to use music from other games because that’s somehow uncreative.
I went through allot of free license Midis and always ran into the same problems. I either didn’t like the results of the conversion or thought the music didn’t fit into the game.
I ended up with a compromise. I picked some license free music that sounds decent on the VB and somehow fits ok to the game. It is not perfect after all but good enough.
I tested the playback of the music within the game but only on the calibration screen. There are still some issues when it comes to switching songs. I also discovered a problem regarding the sound effects which I hopefully can fix easily. I also have to figure out what’s the best volume for music and sound effects.
After that I should be done with the music.

Where’s the Walrus!???
Hehe, I got the sprites from Ben but didn’t bold them in yet.

Sounds like your making progress.
Not really. Classical music is just easy to convert. Sounds good though.
I have just been listening to Johann Sebastian Bach on my Virtual Boy…
If you don’t want to fix it yourself, there are some guys around here that can easily fix the glitchy lines.
If you want to save some money on games on the first run you may want to buy a FalshBoy+ from Richard.

I have a confession to make:I have had the ability to play Bound High on my Virtual Boy since I received my FlashBoy Plus from Richard in June of 2011, so for almost a year and a half now, and I still have not played the game at all…
Hah, I didn’t play it yet for pretty much the same reasons. There are other VB games I didn’t play but I always kind of not touched Bound High because it seems to be the last great game left.

Sound like your doing well with this project. Keep up the good work.
I’m doing my best but I think I need a break now. Midi files are just too annoying. I guess Fishbone will not make it in time for this years Christmas, I’m just to burned out right now.
