I also did this box some month ago. I pretty much copied the FlashBoy Box that’s why it looks quite similar.

So here is the label. It is pretty simple but I like it that way.

Hey thunderstruck,I saw in another thread that you are going to design a sticker label for your GameHero game, which will be used for a reproduction cartridge to be made for you. Can you post the label here once you make it for all to see, and can others use the label for their own reproduction cartridges of the game?
Thanks.
sure
I really liked the ending of “Heavy Rain”. Well… the one I played.
It just came to my mind that I really really hate “Lost Planet”. It is the only game that I ever sold at GameStop. I can even tell why but just thinking about it makes me feel sick.
I am just coming out of my vacation (on week London, pretty cool City) and noticed all of the responses. I guess now I have to program something…

If you ever want help with graphics, I’m a graphic designer. And while I’ve never worked on a game before, I know I could easily create sprites.
That would be great. I usually steal everything together by redrawing stuff with Inkscape. Would be great to have something unique.

thunderstruck, I’m ready to make you a cart of GameHero. Is the ‘polishing’ finished yet ?, and did you do a label design ?
I totally forgot I asked you about that. I guess GameHero will stay as it is, so that I can move on with something new. I will write you am PM as soon as I produced a label.

I’m jealous. I have no compatible skills to aid in development of a VB game. I would love to help had I possessed any necessary skills because I am already dying to play “Lost in Time”
It actually is not to complicated. You just need some basic c-programming skills. Nothing that couldn’t be learned within acceptable time.
Usually once in the evening. It is one of the few sites I still check regularly. I don’t log in every time, though.
The first time I heard of the Virtual Boy was when I saw the AVGN episode. Till then it somehow manged to slip of my radar. However, when I saw the AVGN episode I thought it is big piece of shit.
Some weeks later I saw on in the display window of a local retro game store. I was pretty surprised because I never saw one in real live before. I showed it to my wife and told her about the episode (we also watched it again later that day).
After that I pretty much forgot about the VB again. I though that there were not enough games anyway and that buying it would not be worth it.
However, my wife thought it is pretty cool console and bought it as a Christmas present for me. She actually convinced the dude at the retro game store to sell his VB. It wasn’t even supposed to be sold (you don’t see a VB to often in Germany). The overall condition of the VB was pretty good and it came with Mario Tennis (without the Box though).
When I started the VB for the very first time I was pretty surprised how good the 3D actually is. I bought Teleroboxer and Wario Land (and some other games) and actually liked most of them. I didn’t played through all of them though. The main reason for that was that I just didn’t liked crouching myself in front of it.
However, after some time my VB started gathering dust, so I decided to have a look into VB game development. I tried out some stuff using an emulator and was pretty surprised how easy it is as most of the secrets had already been solved by the guys around here.
After I was sure I would be able to produce something useful I ordered a FlashBoy from Richard and started programming. I started focusing on sound system as I though there was still room for improvement. It was really exciting to get from producing simple sounds to actually playing melodies that can be recognized.
After that I added a simple game on top of it and released it. I still fell like I could do better. However, mainly due to lack of time caused by this damn thesis I have been working on in my free time, my VB is gathering dust again.
Well, lets change that.
Nice review. I actually never played it to the end. Should do it though.
Just played the first run through “New Super Mario Bros. 2”. It is a good game but very easy. I am also disappointed by the 3D effect. They should have looked at Virtual Boy Wario Land to figure out how to do a 2D game in 3D. I played through almost all of the levels (I missed one or two) but I still need to collect all of the coins.
I also finished Zelda Skyward Sword. That one only took me 55 hours. I played through all the side-missions and spent allot of time on exploring stuff. The controls are pretty good but sometimes fail in critical moments which can be quite frustrating. Also I somehow liked Twilight Princess better.
Just installed Batman: Arkham City… so that one will be next.
Well, it has been quite some time since I did something on this project. I already regret talking about it before I really started. However, the thing that has been sucking up most of my free time is done now (almost). Everything is written and submitted and now I am really really tiered.
I will be on vacation for the next and after that I will start programming. This will be fun.
It is a really exciting project. I have been thinking about donating for quite some time now. For 300$ (+30$ for international shipping) they send you a developer kit which includes a prototype of the actual hardware and access to the development resources.
Regarding the technical questions. The FAQ on Kickstarter basically says that it is more or less an 3D-Display with motion detection. Right now they focus on PCs, Consoles are planned for the future. The FAQ says that the only connection needed is DVI (or HDMI). I am not sure how motion data is transmitted though.
I think I am done with Mario Open Tennis. After I discovered what I call the “Master-Startegy” I never lost a single Match again. After all it is an ok game but not great.
Luckily I got my New Super Mario Bros. 2 yesterday. I am already in the last world but I did not collect everything on the way, so I will be busy.
I also started playing Mortal Kombat on Vita. I have already beaten the Stoy-Mode on PS3, so I started playing the Bonus Challenge Tower. It is fun and heavily uses the capabilities of the Vita. However, I am stuck at challenge 35 or something. That fucker just resists to die.
Damn, that’s an impressive collection. I would love to open the factory sealed games one after another.
The German title of this news is a little bit misleading.
Is that a sexy Princess Peach?
It is. I copied her head from another image, but somehow I never got it look right.
Yeah, some of the songs are not perfect. Some of the high pitches can’t be played by the VB. Also the converter does only allow to convert one track of the midi. That’s why some nodes are missing. As the VB can play several tracks it would be possible to change this though. Also the nodes don’t fade in and out. I tried to do that but somehow didn’t get it to work. Finally some songs are played a little bit to slow. This is caused by the fact that the timing for the nodes is not done with interrupts.
I had allot of fun exploring the capabilities of the VB sound system. There is still allot of room for optimization but I’m somehow not in the mood for doing it. That’s why I released all of the sources.
Oh, and thanks for playing through the game.
OK, just to give you guys some updates on this one:
I started collecting some images I will use as templates for drawing some game elements and the first opponent. I am not really skilled in drawing, but I knowhow to copy stuff from others. I also already started drawing stuff with inkscape. As soon as I am done with this basic stuff I will produce some actual code, so I can see if works the way I imagine.
I own the 3DS since day one and I never regret buying it. I didn’t plan to buy it but I just couldn’t resist. There are actually some pretty good titles for it out there. Some of the obviously good titles are:
– Super Mario 3D Land
– Mario Kart 7
– Ocarina of Time 3D
– Resident Evil: Revelations
– Super Street Fighter IV – 3D Edition
– Star Fox 64 3D
– Dead or Alive Dimensions
And there are many more great releases announced. There is also allot of cool stuff available in the online store. I took my chance and bought the Mario titles that had been released for Gameboy, as I never played those.
I am still caught in the middle of Skyward Sword. I like it but it does not drag me as deep into it’s world as Twilight Princess did.
I also started playing Mario Tennis Open on my 3DS. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but for me it feels like there is not allot of strategy involved in the matches. I only played through the first 5 cups with Mario though.
